The mechanisms of involuntary attention. [PDF]

open access: possibleJournal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, 2010
We tested 3 mechanisms of involuntary attention: (1) a perceptual enhancement mechanism, (2) a response-decision mechanism, and (3) a serial-search mechanism. Experiment 1 used a response deadline technique to compare the perceptual enhancement and the decision mechanisms and found evidence consistent with the decision mechanism.

Mechanisms of attention in touch

Somatosensory & Motor Research, 1999
A series of experiments demonstrated the role of higher level cognitive processes, such as attention, in tactile perception. The first series of experiments demonstrated that automatic orienting to a tactile stimulus resulted in inhibition of subsequent stimuli at that body site--inhibition of return (IOR).

Mechanisms of attentional priority.

Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, 1990
When a single abrupt onset occurs in a multielement visual display, it captures attention, possibly by generating an attentional interrupt that designates onsets as being of high priority. In 3 experiments, the mechanisms subserving attentional priority setting were investigated.

Mechanisms of Attention

2004
This chapter reviews some of the studies demonstrating that attention is associated with an increase in activity in the brain region concerned with the processing of whatever it is that is being attended to. The basic assumption is that there is competition between stimuli for processing by the nervous system.

A brain mechanism for attention

Medical Hypotheses, 1990
Attention is directed or focussed consciousness. Consciousness is a subjective sensation produced by the simultaneous activation of discrete neurophysiological systems. These are the alerting, awareness, affect, arousal, and attention systems. The process begins with the subcortical scanning of sensory stimuli for affect and significance via pleasure ...

On a spectral attentional mechanism

Proceedings CVPR IEEE Computer Society Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition, 1996
This paper describes an attentional mechanism based on the interpretation of spectral signatures for detecting regular object configurations in areas of an image delineated using context information. The proposed global operator relies on the spectral analyse's of edge structure and exploits spatial as well as frequency domain constraints derived from ...

Visual attention and the mechanism of metacontrast [PDF]

open access: possiblePsychological Research, 2006
The U-shaped metacontrast function may result from the superimposition of two monotonic components which reflect the effects of mechanisms similar to the peripheral and central processes suggested for backward pattern masking by Turvey (Psychol Rev 80:1-52, 1973).

Neural Mechanisms of Attention

1989
Abstract : This project attained its objectives of developing an animal model to examine the neural mechanisms of attention. The concepts and procedures were successfully produced and resulted in two publications describing the experimental strategy and the results.

Mechanisms of Attention

Soviet Psychology, 1969
There have been several attempts in the field of psychology to explain attention mechanisms on the basis of negative inductive relationships. Such an interpretation has certain justifications vis-a-vis the lower forms of attention, usually characterized as involuntary.
