Effect of the section size, holding temperature and time on the kinetics of the ausferritic transformation and mechanical properties of as-cast ausferritic ductile iron

Materials Science and Engineering: A, 2020
Abstract The present research work studies the effect of section size, holding temperature and time on the microstructure and mechanical properties of as-cast ausferritic ductile iron. To that aim, Y block standard samples of 12.5 and 25.0 mm thickness were produced through a controlled cooling process.

A Microscale Model for Ausferritic Transformation of Austempered Ductile Irons

Metallurgical and Materials Transactions A, 2016
This paper presents a new metallurgical model for the ausferritic transformation of ductile cast iron. The model allows predicting the evolution of phases in terms of the chemical composition, austenitization and austempering temperatures, graphite nodule count, and distribution of graphite nodule size.

Wear Characteristic of Surface Hardened Ausferritic Si-Steel

Journal of Iron and Steel Research, International, 2007
Abstract High strength steels can be produced by austempering of Si-containing steels. It is possible to achieve high toughness and good wear resistance in these steels. Surface hardening of this group of steels can further increase the surface hardness and wear resistance and in combination with high strength in the bulk, also the fatigue strength ...

Development of a high strength high toughness ausferritic steel

Materials Science and Engineering: A, 2009
Abstract A new ausferritic steel with high strength and exceptionally high fracture toughness has been developed. This steel has been synthesized integrating concepts from Austempered Ductile Cast Iron (ADI) technology. The influence of the austempering temperature on the microstructure and mechanical properties of this steel at room temperature and ...

Development of Ausferritic Microstructure in a Medium Carbon Steel

Heat Treating Conference, 2017
Abstract This paper reports on a study to investigate the creation of a mixed microstructure consisting of proeutectoid ferrite, bainite, and austenite in a medium carbon high silicon steel. The microstructure was produced through the use of a continuous cooling process at a moderate cooling rate from the austenitizing temperature range ...

Austempering Treatment in HIP Improves Ausferritic Steels and Ductile Irons

Heat Treating Conference, 2015
Abstract Austempering heat treatments of steels and cast irons are usually performed using salt bath quenching followed by isothermal transformation of austenite to bainite or ausferrite. High Pressure Gas Quenching (HPGQ) at 1-4 MPa gas pressures is increasingly used to replace oil quenching, but may also be used for austempering ...

Microstructural and crystallographic features of ausferrite in as-cast gray iron

Materials Characterization, 2004
Ausferrite has been shown to form during casting of gray iron by carefully controlling the alloying additions Mo, Mn, Si and Cu and consists of an acicular ferrite constituent, termed bainitic ferrite ({alpha}{sub B}), which develops during continuous cooling as a coarse, feathery-type structure within the prior austenite ({gamma}) grains.

Advanced Properties of Ausferritic Ductile Iron Obtained in As-Cast Conditions

International Journal of Metalcasting, 2016
In previous studies, the process parameters to obtain ausferritic ductile iron in as-cast conditions by means of engineered cooling were defined, that is, without an austempering heat treatment. This material was fundamentally characterized, and its mechanical properties were determined.
