Austenite in Steel

2015
Austenite is the key to the versatility of steel and the controllable nature of its properties. It is the parent phase of pearlite, martensite, bainite, and ferrite. This chapter discusses the importance of austenite, beginning with the influence of austenitic grain size and how to accurately measure it.

Ferritic-austenitic solidification mode in austenitic stainless steel welds

Metallurgical Transactions A, 1980
The macro-and microstructures of about fifty different stainless welds of the AISI/ AWS 300 series are analyzed. The results indicate that under conditions corresponding to a typical shielded metal arc (SMA) welding the welds with a ratio in the range 1.48≾Cr eq /Ni eq ≾1.95, where Ni

Prior-austenite grain refinement in P92 steel using double austenitization treatment

Materials Research Express, 2018
The experimental investigation of ‘double austenitization based normalizing and tempering’ (DNT) heat treatments on tensile behavior and microstructural morphology of the CSEF/M P92 steel was carried out and compared it with the ‘conventional normalizing

Transformation of Austenite

1999
Abstract This chapter discusses the isothermal transformation of austenite to pearlite, bainite, martensite, proeutectoid ferrite, and proeutectoid cementite. It describes the transformation mechanisms in eutectoid, hypoeutectoid, and hypereutectoid steels, the factors that influence nucleation and growth, and the characteristic features

Modified quenching temperature selection method for partial austenitization quenching and partitioning steel

Materials Research Express, 2018
Quenching and partitioning (Q&P) steel has bright prospects for applications in the automotive lightweight field. For predicting the optimal quenching temperature (QT) more accurately, a QT selection method modified by DICTRA simulation was proposed.

Effect of Austenite Stability on Pack Aluminizing of Austenitic Stainless Steels

JOM, 2014
Aluminide coatings were applied to the surfaces of several austenitic stainless steels—UNS S30300, S30400, S30900, S31000, and S31600 (Type 303, 304, 309, 310, and 316)—by the halide activated pack cementation process. The coating compositions, microstructures, and hardness were determined for the different steels coated at 850°C for 25 h.

Effect of hydrogen on austenite to martensite transformation in an austenitic stainless steel

Journal of Materials Science Letters, 1987

Retained Austenite

1999
Abstract This chapter addresses the issue of retained austenite in quenched carburized steels. It explains why retained austenite can be expected at the surface of case-hardened components, how to estimate the amount that will be present, and how to effectively stabilize or otherwise control it. It presents detailed images and data plots
