A Comparative Study of Directed Energy Deposition‐Arc and Casting: Enhancing Mechanical and Thermal Properties of Hot‐Work Tool Steels

open access: yessteel research international, EarlyView.
The study investigates the influence of DED‐Arc/M versus casting on the microstructure and material properties of X40CrMoV5‐1 (AISI H13) hot‐work tool steel. DED‐Arc/M yields finer microstructures, superior mechanical strength, and ductility, but slightly reduced thermal conductivity.

Experimental study of the brittle–ductile transition in hot cutting of SG iron specimens [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0924013612002579The present paper investigates the brittle-ductile transition (BDT) of the primary shear zone during cutting of spheroidal graphite (SG) iron in the austenitization temperature range ...

Increasing the Reuse Potential of High‐Strength Steels by Extending the Fatigue Life through Surface Treatments

open access: yessteel research international, EarlyView.
Surface reconditioning through mechanical and electrochemical polishing is shown to extend the fatigue life of predamaged 42CrMo4 steel by over 12 times. By removing ≈100 μm of surface material, surface‐driven fatigue damage is mitigated. This study introduces a reuse potential metric to evaluate fatigue recovery and support sustainable steel reuse. The Role and Modeling of Ultrafast Heating in Isothermal Austenite Formation Kinetics in Quenching and Partitioning Steel

open access: yesMetals
A modified Johnson–Mehl–Avrami–Kolmogorov (JMAK) model, including the heating rates, was proposed in this study to improve the accuracy of isothermal austenite formation kinetics prediction.

Alloy Qualification for Producing Quench and Tempered Plate Steels with Extra‐Heavy Gage

open access: yessteel research international, EarlyView.
This study develops alloy concepts for ultraheavy steel plates (>100 mm) with ≥690 MPa yield strength. Through dilatometry and Jominy testing, the effects of Mo, Ni, and B on hardenability are quantified. A synergy between 0.5% Mo and 0.5%–1.0% Ni ensures core strength at low cooling rates, while boron microalloying suppresses ferrite and promotes ...

Synergistic effect of well/over-tempered hierarchical martensitic structure and carbides (M23C6 and MX) on austenite growth in 9Cr steel

open access: yesJournal of Materials Research and Technology, 2023
To clarify the synergistic effect of well/over-tempered hierarchical martensitic structure and carbides (M23C6 and MX) on austenite growth, the austenite growth during step-heat austenitization for a selected 9Cr steel was investigated by dilatometry ...

Microstructure of as-cast ferritic-pearlitic nodular cast irons [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
A review of past works on the formation of ferrite and pearlite in nodular cast iron is proposed. The effects of cooling rate after solidification and of nodule count on the formation of both constituents are stressed, though much emphasis is put on ...

HWTS 50 Tool Steel Tailored for Laser Powder Bed Fusion: Sliding Wear of Bare Surfaces and Nitriding Response in Comparison with 18Ni300 and AISI H13

open access: yessteel research international, EarlyView.
This work investigates the wear resistance and nitriding behavior of PBF‐LB/M‐processed Osprey HWTS 50, a lean hot work tool steel. Three heat treatment conditions are compared to conventional wrought H13, H11, and PBF‐LB/M 18Ni300. The study highlights HWTS 50's enhanced nitrogen diffusion, deeper nitriding hardness depth, and comparable or improved ...

Digital image correlation as a usefful tool of analysis of hot cutting process [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
This study deals with the use of Digital Image Correlation (DIC) to investigate the physical phenomena taking place during the orthogonal cutting of a SG iron specimen at high temperature (around 1,000 °C).

Critical Temperature Range in Standard and Ni-bearing Spheroidal Graphite Cast Irons [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Describing the conditions for reaustenitization of spheroidal graphite cast irons is of interest for their heat-treatment after casting, e.g. for manufacturing austempered ductile irons.
