A comparative analysis of methods related to automatic ship berthing

2019 5th International Conference on Optimization and Applications (ICOA), 2019
Automatic berthing has been known as one of the most difficult problems in ship control. During port approach and berthing maneuvers, the ship master takes into account many factors before any maneuver action, i.e. ship speed, wind speed, wind direction, water current direction, available power, heading angle and ship response.

A study on automatic ship berthing system design

2009 International Conference on Networking, Sensing and Control, 2009
The berthing is one of the most sophisticated control action carried out by human operators, especially when the disturbance due to wind and current become relatively large with a small ship velocity. Since, to improve the flexibility and safety' ship for berthing, auxiliary maneuvering measures such as bow and stern thrusters have come to be attached.

Minimum time-energy trajectory planning for automatic ship berthing

IEEE Journal of Oceanic Engineering, 1995
A ship optimal trajectory planning method based on the dynamic model of the ship is presented. First a mathematical modular model is introduced for describing the non-linear dynamics of the ship. Then the problem of optimal trajectory planning is discussed.

Automatic Berthing Trajectory Planning for an Underactuated Ship Based on Extended Dynamic Window Algorithm and A* Algorithm

open access: closedInternational Conference on Transportation Information and Safety, 2023
This paper proposes a real-time trajectory planning method for automatic berthing of an underactuated ship. This method considers the overall constraints of the ship’s dynamics model and obstacles, introduces a global planning algorithm to avoid falling ...

Nonlinear Model Predictive Control for Automatic Berthing of the Underactuated Twin-propeller Twin-Rudder Ship

open access: closedACM Cloud and Autonomic Computing Conference, 2021
In order to cope with the problem that the automatic berthing control of the underactuated ship cannot track any path, this paper proposes an automatic berthing method for underactuated twin-propeller twin-rudder ships based on the nonlinear model ...

Automatic Control of Large Ships in Pilotage and Berthing

open access: closedJournal of Navigation, 1974
This paper surveys the present methods of pilotage and berthing, discusses some of the statistics of collision and grounding in confined waters, and suggests the development of shipborne automatic control devices to be used for the pilotage and berthing of large vessels.

A Fully Automatic Berthing Test Using the Training Ship Shioji Maru

open access: closedJournal of Navigation, 1991
In this paper, the authors discuss a fully automatic berthing system and actual tests using a small training ship, Shioji Maru. The ship is about 440 gross tonnage and furnished with a controllable pitch propeller, a bow thruster and a stern thruster to which a computer can easily be linked.
