Automaticity in reading isiZulu

open access: yesReading & Writing, 2016
Automaticity, or instant recognition of combinations of letters as units of language, is essential for proficient reading in any language. The article explores automaticity amongst competent adult first-language readers of isiZulu, and the factors ...

Novel attentional gait index reveals a cognitive ability-related decline in gait automaticity during dual-task walking

open access: yesFrontiers in Aging Neuroscience
IntroductionGait automaticity refers to the ability to walk with minimal recruitment of attentional networks typically mediated through the prefrontal cortex (PFC).

Involvement of the Na+/Ca2+ Exchanger in the Automaticity of Guinea-Pig Pulmonary Vein Myocardium as Revealed by SEA0400

open access: yesJournal of Pharmacological Sciences, 2009
.: We examined the involvement of the Na+/Ca2+ exchanger in the automaticity of the pulmonary vein myocardium with a specific inhibitor, SEA0400. Action potentials were recorded from the myocardial layer of isolated guinea-pig pulmonary vein preparations,

Deep learning‐based identification of sinoatrial node‐like pacemaker cells from SHOX2/HCN4 double‐positive cells differentiated from human iPS cells

open access: yesJournal of Arrhythmia, 2023
Background Cardiomyocytes derived from human iPS cells (hiPSCs) include cells showing SAN‐ and non‐SAN‐type spontaneous APs. Objectives To examine whether the deep learning technology could identify hiPSC‐derived SAN‐like cells showing SAN‐type‐APs by ...

Automated Symbolic Orienting: The missing link

open access: yesFrontiers in Psychology, 2012
Attention can be controlled either exogenously, driven by the stimulus features, or endogenously, driven by the internal expectancies about events in the environment.

From automatic structures to automatic groups

open access: yesGroups, Geometry, and Dynamics, 2014
In this paper we introduce the concept of a Cayley graph automatic group (CGA group or graph automatic group, for short) which generalizes the standard notion of an automatic group. Like the usual automatic groups graph automatic ones enjoy many nice properties: these groups are invariant under the change of generators, they are closed under direct and

The anti‐CRISPR protein AcrIE8.1 inhibits the type I‐E CRISPR‐Cas system by directly binding to the Cascade subunit Cas11

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we present the structure of AcrIE8.1, a previously uncharacterized anti‐CRISPR protein that inhibits the type I‐E CRISPR‐Cas system. Through a combination of structural and biochemical analyses, we demonstrate that AcrIE8.1 directly binds to the Cas11 subunit of the Cascade complex to inhibit the CRISPR‐Cas system.

The enemy within: propagation of aberrant corticostriatal learning to cortical function in Parkinson's disease

open access: yesFrontiers in Neurology, 2013
Motor dysfunction in Parkinson’s disease is believed to arise primarily from pathophysiology in the dorsal striatum and its related corticostriatal and thalamostriatal circuits during progressive dopamine denervation.

Interplay between circadian and other transcription factors—Implications for cycling transcriptome reprogramming

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This perspective highlights emerging insights into how the circadian transcription factor CLOCK:BMAL1 regulates chromatin architecture, cooperates with other transcription factors, and coordinates enhancer dynamics. We propose an updated framework for how circadian transcription factors operate within dynamic and multifactorial chromatin landscapes ...

Emotional distraction and bodily reaction: Modulation of autonomous responses by anodal tDCS to the prefrontal cortex

open access: yesFrontiers in Cellular Neuroscience, 2015
Prefrontal electric stimulation has been demonstrated to effectively modulate cognitive processing. Specifically, the amelioration of cognitive control over emotional distraction by transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) points towards targeted ...
