Autosegmental Aims in Surface-Optimizing Phonology

Linguistic Inquiry, 2019
We develop a novel optimization approach to tone. Its grammatical component consists of the similarity- and proximity-based correspondence constraint framework of Agreement by Correspondence theory (ABC). Its representational component, Q Theory, decomposes segments ( Q) into temporally ordered, quantized subsegments ( q), which comprise unitary sets ...

Autosegmental Phonology

2018
Autosegments were introduced by John Goldsmith in his 1976 M.I.T. dissertation to represent tone and other suprasegmental phenomena. Goldsmith’s intuition, embodied in the term he created, was that autosegments constituted an independent, conceptually equal tier of phonological representation, with both tiers realized simultaneously like the separate ...

Representations Reconsidered (ii): Autosegmental Phonology

1993
In the discussion of the standard model given in the interlude, we saw (see p. 155) that, where phonological representations are linear sequences of segments, and phonological properties are transmitted from one segment to another, we are unable to capture certain sorts of generalisation, such as the Akan vowel harmony generalisation: that roots are ...

Speech recognition using autosegmental representation of phonological units with interface to the trended HMM

Speech Communication, 1997
Abstract A novel speech recognizer is described which capitalizes on multi-dimensional articulatory structures and incorporates key ideas from autosegmental phonology and articulatory phonology. The novelty has been in the design of the atomic units of speech so as to arrive at a unified and parsimonious way to account for the context-dependent ...

Emergent phonological representations: no need for autosegmental architecture

2015
This paper examines implications for autosegmental representations of a model that minimizes the role of an innate linguistic endowment in grammar formation. If the innate linguistic endowment is minimized, language learning is from the bottom up and cannot rely on universal structures.
