Auxiliary problem principle extended to variational inequalities
Journal of Optimization Theory and Applications, 1988The auxiliary problem principle has been proposed by the author as a framework to describe and analyze iterative optimization algorithms such as gradient or subgradient as well as decomposition/coordination algorithms. In this paper, we extend this approach to the computation of solutions to variational inequalities.

Auxiliary Variables in Statistical Mechanics: Variational Principle
Journal of Mathematical Physics, 1968The variational principle of Bohm and Pines for the ground-state energy of the electron gas with uniform neutralizing positive-charge background, employing auxiliary variables, is reviewed as an illustration of the past use of auxiliary variables and as an example of the type of physical system to which the variational principle of this paper can be ...

Auxiliary problem principle and decomposition of optimization problems
Journal of Optimization Theory and Applications, 1980The auxiliary problem principle allows one to find the solution of a problem (minimization problem, saddle-point problem, etc.) by solving a sequence of auxiliary problems. There is a wide range of possible choices for these problems, so that one can give special features to them in order to make them easier to solve.

Combining the Auxilliary Problem Principle with Approximation Methods
1997The paper deals with iterative schemes for finding a zero of a maximal monotone operator. A combination of the auxiliary principle with the Tikhonov method is considered. Under some assumptions the sequence generated by such an iterative scheme is shown to converge to a solution of the problem that is required to satisfy an associated variational ...

A variational principle of maximal decoupling between the collective and noncollective subspaces has recently been proposed to pin down the collective degrees of freedom of the nuclear many-body problem. This maximal-decoupling variational principle is further utilized here to determine in an optimal way the auxiliary Hamiltonians to be used in ...
