Trends and risk factors for infant mortality in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2020
A high infant mortality rate (IMR) indicates a failure to meet people’s healthcare needs. The IMR in Lao People’s Democratic Republic has been decreasing but still remains high.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Auxiliary selection and the typical properties of subjects

open access: yes, 2007
I present a semantic analysis of two types of auxiliary selection patterns. Italian, Dutch, French, and Old Japanese have a pattern in which auxiliary selection is conditioned by verb class, and there is also a pattern active in many Italo-Romance ...

Hyperosmotic stress induces PARP1‐mediated HPF1‐dependent mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Sorbitol‐induced hyperosmotic stress rapidly induces reversible mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation (MARylation) on PARP1 without the signs of genotoxic signaling. We show that PARP1 autoMARylation is HPF1 dependent and forms hydroxylamine‐resistant O‐glycosidic linkages.

Processing auxiliary selection with Italian intransitive verbs [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
For intransitive verbs in languages with a choice of perfective auxiliaries, off-line acceptability judgments conform to a semantically based Auxiliary Selection Hierarchy (ASH) (Sorace 2000, 2004).

An isoform of 14‐3‐3 protein regulates transbilayer lipid movement at the plasma membrane

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Loss of 14‐3‐3ζ in CHO cells confers resistance to exogenous phosphatidylserine (PS) and impairs endocytosis‐independent inward flip‐flop of fluorescent PS at the plasma membrane. RNAi‐mediated knockdown reproduces this defect, while no additive effect is seen in ATP11C‐deficient cells.

Evaluating the impact of auxiliary fan practices on localised subsurface ventilation

open access: yesInternational Journal of Mining Science and Technology, 2019
Mines are continually expanding in size and depth, leading to an increased reliance on localised subsurface ventilation systems. The use of underground auxiliary fans is a favoured method to increase and control airflow in working areas.

Epigenetic blind spots – the role of DNA methylation dynamics in stem cell‐based models of embryogenesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Embryo‐like structures (stembryos) are an innovative tool, but they are hindered by experimental variability and limited developmental potential. DNA methylation is crucial for mammalian development, but its status in stembryo models is poorly characterized.

Septin 9 PB domains coordinate centrosome positioning and microtubule acetylation to control epithelial polarity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Septin 9 polybasic domains couple phosphoinositide‐rich membrane binding to centrosome positioning, Golgi organization, and microtubule acetylation to control epithelial polarity. Their loss disrupts this axis, causing centrosome mispositioning, Golgi fragmentation, reduced microtubule acetylation, and polarity inversion via upregulation of the ...

Parameters in the development of Romance perfective auxiliary selection

open access: yes, 2023
This paper undertakes a synchronic comparison of auxiliary selection across a number of different Romance varieties that show how minimal differences among otherwise highly homogenous ‘systems’ can be used to investigate microvariation along the ...
