Topological Susceptibility from Slabs [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
In quantum field theories with topological sectors, a non-perturbative quantity of interest is the topological susceptibility chi_t. In principle it seems straightforward to measure chi_t by means of Monte Carlo simulations.

Protein pyrophosphorylation by inositol pyrophosphates — detection, function, and regulation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Protein pyrophosphorylation is an unusual signaling mechanism that was discovered two decades ago. It can be driven by inositol pyrophosphate messengers and influences various cellular processes. Herein, we summarize the research progress and challenges of this field, covering pathways found to be regulated by this posttranslational modification as ...

Composability of Markov Models for Processing Sensor Data [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
We show that it is possible to apply the divide-and-conquer principle in constructing a Markov model for sensor data from available sensor logs. The state space can be partitioned into clusters, for which the required transition counts or probabilities ...

Large deviations for risk measures in finite mixture models

open access: yes, 2018
Due to their heterogeneity, insurance risks can be properly described as a mixture of different fixed models, where the weights assigned to each model may be estimated empirically from a sample of available data.

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Learning Causal Biological Networks With the Principle of Mendelian Randomization

open access: yesFrontiers in Genetics, 2019
Although large amounts of genomic data are available, it remains a challenge to reliably infer causal (i. e., regulatory) relationships among molecular phenotypes (such as gene expression), especially when multiple phenotypes are involved.

Limits on Kaluza-Klein Models from COBE Results [PDF]

open access: yes, 1995
The large-angular-scale anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background radiation in multidimensional cosmological models (Kaluza-Klein models) is studied. Limits on parameters of the models imposed by the experimental data are obtained.

Inverse Classification for Comparison-based Interpretability in Machine Learning

open access: yes, 2017
In the context of post-hoc interpretability, this paper addresses the task of explaining the prediction of a classifier, considering the case where no information is available, neither on the classifier itself, nor on the processed data (neither the ...

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

Potential inconsistencies in Zika surveillance data and our understanding of risk during pregnancy.

open access: yesPLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases, 2018
BackgroundA significant increase in microcephaly incidence was reported in Northeast Brazil at the end of 2015, which has since been attributed to an epidemic of Zika virus (ZIKV) infections earlier that year.
