Low-noise avalanche photodiode in standard 0.35-um CMOS technology

open access: yes, 2008
In this paper, we report on an Avalanche Photodiode (APD) fabricated in a standard 0.35-μm CMOS technology. The main electrooptical characteristics of the device are presented, showing a remarkably low-noise factor if compared to other CMOS APDs.

A 250 m Direct Time-of-Flight Ranging System Based on a Synthesis of Sub-Ranging Images and a Vertical Avalanche Photo-Diodes (VAPD) CMOS Image Sensor

open access: yesSensors, 2018
We have developed a direct time-of-flight (TOF) 250 m ranging Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) image sensor (CIS) based on a 688 × 384 pixels array of vertical avalanche photodiodes (VAPD).

SiC avalanche photodiode array with microlenses

open access: yesOptics Express, 2010
A simple technique to incorporate microlenes with small photodiode arrays is demonstrated and analyzed. Using this method, the fill factor was increased from 2.6% to 22.4% for a two by two array. Simulation results are also shown. The photocurrent with microlens was approximately 8.6 times larger than without the microlens, which is consistent with ...

A COMPOSITE PHOTODETECTOR BASED ON THE PHOTODIODE AND AVALANCHE TRANSISTOR

open access: yes, 2020
The present work reports the electrical properties and photosensitivity of a composite photodetector based on the photodiode and avalanche transistor, which has a photosensitivity two times higher than the photosensitivity of the single photodiode.

Disordered Carbon Shells Enable Shape Dependent Fluorescence Enhancement in Nanodiamond Quantum Sensors Revealed by Correlative TEM–Fluorescence Microscopy

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, Volume 36, Issue 45, 5 June 2026.
Molten KNO2 treatment induces a lowrefractive index disordered carbon shell on fluorescent nanodiamonds, enhancing fluorescence emission while preserving spin coherence. Machine learningassisted correlative TEMPL enables direct single‐particle resolution of this enhancement relative to air‐oxidized nanodiamonds of similar morphology, establishing a ...

Self‐Sustained Oscillations in MoS2 Optomechanical Resonators for VHF Optical Radio

open access: yesAdvanced Photonics Research, Volume 7, Issue 6, June 2026.
This work demonstrates the use of 2D materials drum resonators to generate and modulate radio‐over‐laser signals. Taking advantage of the self‐sustained oscillations arising in cavity optomechanical systems by a continuous wave visible laser, a radio frequency signal is generated and frequency‐modulated by just changing a DC gate voltage.

Analytical Performance Modeling of InP-InGaAs Hetero-junction Avalanche Photodiode

open access: yesIraqi Journal of Physics, 2009
In this study, an analytical model depending on experimental results for InPInGaAs avalanche photodiode at low bias was presented and the characteristics of gain for this photodiode were determined directly by the impulse response.

Shot Noise Suppression in Avalanche Photodiodes

open access: yesPhysical Review Letters, 2005
We identify a new shot noise suppression mechanism in a thin (~100 nm) heterostructure avalanche photodiode. In the low-gain regime the shot noise is suppressed due to temporal correlations within amplified current pulses. We demonstrate in a Monte Carlo simulation that the effective excess noise factors can be <1, and reconcile the apparent ...
