Harvesting frequency and intensity are management criteria in forage plants and their choices affect herbage yield and quality. The objectives of the study were to evaluate herbage yields of morphological components and chemical composition (crude protein, neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent fiber) of Saia oats (Avena strigosa Schreb) at three ...

Swine slurry application and soil management on double-cropped oat/maize
The swine production in southern Brazil is concentrated in small farms that use residues as a nutrient source for crops of economic interest. This study aimed to evaluate the use of swine slurry associated with tillage systems on double-cropped oat/maize.

Cover crop productivity and subsequent soybean yield in the western Corn Belt
Abstract Cover crops (CC) in corn (Zea mays L.) and soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] rotations may prevent N loss and provide other ecosystem services but CC productivity in the western Corn Belt is limited by the short growing season. Our objective was to assess CC treatment and planting practice effects on CC biomass, spring soil nitrate ...

Analysis of Genotypic Variability in Avena spp. Regarding Allelopathic Potentiality [PDF]
: The recognized allelopathic activity of oats as a soil-cover plant induces the study of the potential of their germplasm. The objective of this study is to verify if there is genotype variability in the Avena spp.

Oats are of great economic importance. This species is unfairly neglected and less cultivated in the world and our country, because other small grains give a higher yield. This study aimed to test black oats - Avena strigosa Schreb. and examine its morphologically productive properties on chernozem.

Carbon concentration predicts soil contamination of plant residues
Plant biomass can be corrected for soil contamination knowing C concentration. Knowing this association will lead to more and better estimations of surface residue mass with conservation agricultural management. Little practical difference existed among plant sources in the association between ash and C concentrations. DM = dry matter.
