The Axial Flow Compressor

1981
The axial flow compressor is the second type of dynamic compressor, whose general nature and capabilities were introduced in section 1.3. It absorbs energy from an external power source, raising the pressure of a continuous flow of working fluid by means of its blading geometry and motion.

Instrumentation for Axial-Flow-Compressor Research

Journal of Fluids Engineering, 1952
Abstract A discussion of many of the air-flow instruments currently used in compressor research is given. A history of the development of some of the instruments is presented together with the reasons for adopting the present designs.

Axial Flow Compressors

1979
The only additional material here over that in chapter 4 is that it is convenient in the velocity diagrams to specify angles δ and γ for trigonometric purposes and polytropic stage efficiency is of importance since axial compressors, which are usually multistage machines are mostly designed on the basis of one stage with an assumed constant stage ...

Circumferential Asymmetry in Axial Flow Compressors

The Journal of the Royal Aeronautical Society, 1966
In this paper we are restricting our attention to those cases of circumferential inlet distortion where the distortion of the velocity profile is too large to be described as a small perturbation. Thus any theory describing the flow must use a mathematical model which is non-linear.

On the Aerodynamic Design of Axial-Flow Compressors and Turbines

Journal of Applied Mechanics, 1948
Abstract In this paper a theoretical method is presented to determine the flow of a perfect (frictionless, incompressible) fluid across a cascade built up of arbitrary airfoils. The presentation refers to compressor blading but is immediately applicable to turbine blading.

Growth of a Perturbation in an Axial Flow Compressor

Journal of Engineering for Power, 1979
A time-dependent linearized approach is used to predict the amplification or the decay of an initial perturbation in the multistage axial compressor of high hub-to-tip ratio. This analysis shows that for unstalled flow regimes the change in perturbation amplitude remains limited. The linearized theory remains valid until the stall limit.

Modified Surge in an Axial Flow Compressor

Volume 1: Turbomachinery, 1992
This paper deals with an experimental study of the unsteady flow in a multistage axial-flow compressor with a high design flow coefficient (p = 1.2) at rpm lower than the design ones. A detailed description of the rotating stall during the so-called “modified surge” is given.

Unsteady Flow in Axial Flow Compressors

1991
A review is made of the experimental rotating stall work on a low-speed compressor stage. The instantaneous flow field inside the cell is explored using multiple hot wires in the absolute frame of reference. Rotor blade stall and radial drift of the boundary layer is investigated by on-rotor blade instrumentation.

Axial-Flow Compressors for Gas Turbines

Journal of Fluids Engineering, 1948
Abstract The development of the gas turbine during the last decade has opened a new field for compressor application. The compressor is an essential component of every gas-turbine power plant. It delivers air at some elevated pressure to the burner in sufficient quantity to maintain an efficient combustion of fuel and to cool the ...
