Intrinsic limits governing MBE growth of Ga-assisted GaAs nanowires on Si(111)

open access: yes, 2012
Diffusion-enhanced and desorption-limited growth regimes of Ga-assisted GaAs nanowires were identified. In the latter regime, the number of vertical NWs with a narrow length distribution was increased by raising the growth temperature.

Characterization of Defect Distribution in an Additively Manufactured AlSi10Mg as a Function of Processing Parameters and Correlations with Extreme Value Statistics

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Predicting extreme defects in additive manufacturing remains a key challenge limiting its structural reliability. This study proposes a statistical framework that integrates Extreme Value Theory with advanced process indicators to explore defect–process relationships and improve the estimation of critical defect sizes. The approach provides a basis for

Propagating plane harmonic waves through finite length plates of variable thickness using finite element techniques [PDF]

open access: yes, 1983
An analysis is given using finite element techniques which addresses the propagaton of a uniform incident pressure wave through a finite diameter axisymmetric tapered plate immersed in a fluid.

Understanding the Effect of Resistance Temperature Detector Temperature Controllers on Microstructural Alignment in Magnetic Freeze Casting

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The effect of temperature controllers that are commonly used in freeze‐casting is investigated in this work. Temperature controllers are observed to generate a voltage in the slurry. Microstructural alignment and ultimate compressive strength data show this voltage to interfere with the ability to align the microstructure using magnetic fields ...

Derivation of Conditions for the Normal Gain Behavior of Conical Horns

open access: yesInternational Journal of Antennas and Propagation, 2007
Monotonically increasing gain-versus-frequency pattern is in general expected to be a characteristic of aperture antennas that include the smooth-wall conical horn.

Evaluation of the Potential of Laser Shock Peening Compared with Cold Expansion for Improving Fatigue Resistance of Riveted Lap Joints of Aerospace Grade 7175 Al Alloy

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study investigates laser shock peening for enhancing fatigue performance of riveted aerospace aluminum joints. A comparative approach with cold expansion combines fatigue testing and synchrotron X‐ray methods. Integrating mechanical testing with residual stress and strain characterization provides insights into how different treatments affect the ...

Ocular size and shape in lens-induced Myopization in young Guinea pigs

open access: yesBMC Ophthalmology, 2019
Background Lens-induced myopization in guinea pigs has been used as model for the process of myopization in humans. It has not been explored yet whether the change in globe shape in eyes undergoing myopization is similar in experimental myopia in guinea ...

Rotary drum separator system [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
A rotary phase separator system generally includes a step-shaped rotary drum separator (RDS) and a motor assembly. The aspect ratio of the stepped drum minimizes power for both the accumulating and pumping functions.
