AXIAL ELECTROMAGNETIC FORCE DENSITY IN MPD THRUSTERS

An MPD thruster formulation involving coupled aerothermodynamic-electromagnetic equations and including viscous effects is developed and solved. The electromagnetic force density distribution in the thruster interior is studied. Axial force densities are found to be largest on the cathode longitudinal surface.

Electromagnetic torque and force in axially symmetric liquid-crystal droplets

Circularly polarized light exerts torque on birefringent objects. In the case of axially symmetric particles, however, the moment of radiation force balances the direct optical torque. This explains the observation that radial liquid-crystal droplets, in contrast to planar droplets, do not spin in circularly polarized light.

Electromagnetic levitation forces and effective inductance in axially symmetric systems

An analysis is developed which expresses the average electromagnetic levitation force Fx on a spherical conductor in terms of the effective inductance L of the excitation coil. This force is given by Fx = ½ I02 (∂L/∂x) where I0 is the r.m.s. coil current and x is the separation of the coil and sphere.
