An electric charge has no screw sense--a comment on the twistfree formulation of electrodynamics by da Rocha & Rodrigues [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Da Rocha and Rodigues (RR) claim (i) that in classical electrodynamics in vector calculus the distinction between polar and axial vectors and in exterior calculus between twisted and untwisted forms is inappropriate and superfluous, and (ii) that they ...

Tumor‐stromal crosstalk and macrophage enrichment are associated with chemotherapy response in bladder cancer

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Chemoresistance in bladder cancer: Macrophage recruitment associated with CXCL1, CXCL5 and CXCL8 expression is characteristic of Gemcitabine/Cisplatin (Gem/Cis) Non‐Responder tumors (right side) while Responder tumors did not show substantial tumor‐stromal crosstalk (left side). All biological icons are attributed to Bioicons: carcinoma, cancerous‐cell‐

Experimental investigation and analysis of two sources of nozzle-thrust misalignment [PDF]

open access: yes, 1970
Asymmetry of nozzle's throat produces oscillatory type net side-force axial profile. Using mean values of localized static pressure and Mach number, scaling laws for flat-plate supersonic flow over protrusion are applied to nozzle expansion cone ...

Single‐molecule DNA flow‐stretch assays for high‐throughput DNA–protein interaction studies

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We describe an optimised single‐molecule DNA flow‐stretch assay that visualises DNA–protein interactions in real time. Linear DNA fragments are tethered to a surface and stretched by buffer flow for fluorescence imaging. Using λ and φX174 DNA, this protocol enhances reproducibility and accessibility, providing a versatile approach for studying diverse ...

A 3D beam-column element implemented within a hybrid force-based method [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
This paper describes a force-based beam-column element implemented using a hybrid force-based solution strategy. The element can accommodate elastic-plastic strain hardening material behaviour under various loadings including axial, torsion, bending ...

Chameleon sequences reveal structural effects in proteins representing micelle‐like distribution of hydrophobicity

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Amino acids sequence of two different proteins with the same sequence (chameleon sequence—black boxes) represent in 3D structure of the proteins different secondary structures: HHHH—helical and BBB—Beta‐structural. The chains folded in water environment adopt different III‐order structures in which the chameleon fragments appear to adopt similar status

Analysis of Traveling Wave and Combined Site Effect of Long-Span Upper-Bearing Concrete-Filled Steel Tubular Arch Bridge

open access: yesAdvances in Civil Engineering
In order to study the traveling wave effect and combined site effect of long-span steel tube concrete-filled arch bridge, a 400-m span bridge of the same type is taken as an example, and a large-mass time-history analysis method with multipoint input of ...

Rotational dynamics of a superhelix towed in a Stokes fluid

open access: yes, 2007
Motivated by the intriguing motility of spirochetes (helically-shaped bacteria that screw through viscous fluids due to the action of internal periplasmic flagella), we examine the fundamental fluid dynamics of superhelices translating and rotating in a ...

Analysing the significance of small conformational changes and low occupancy states in serial crystallographic data

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This protocol paper outlines methods to establish the success of a time‐resolved serial crystallographic experiment, by means of statistical analysis of timepoint data in reciprocal space and models in real space. We show how to amplify the signal from excited states to visualise structural changes in successful experiments.

Effect of floating axial holder on oscillating cold forging of spline shaft

open access: yesMATEC Web of Conferences, 2018
Oscillating technique is applied into the axial forging process of spline shaft to decrease the forming load and improve the quality of products. A floating axial holder with dwell force is designed to control the material flow.
