Axial density and temperature variations in a magnetically confined arc

Axial variations of electron density ne and temperature Te have been found in magnetically confined arcs assumed by other workers to be axially uniform. Results of measurements using plasma radiation, swiveling water-cooled electrostatic probes, and Thomson scattering of dye laser radiation are presented.

The axially dispersed plug flow model was used to study the variations of axial mixing in a laboratory model aeration tank, with variations of temperature, air flow rate, and water flow rate. The effect of geometry was also considered briefly by comparing two different width to depth ratios.

A coarse observational/paleomagnetic confirmation is presented for the central hypothesis of paleomagnetism stating the predominance of axial dipole under averaging. The confirmation is based on the averaging time smaller than the full periods for axial dipole and larger than for equatorial one.
