Autophagy and mitophagy in pancreatic β‐cell homeostasis and their involvement in diabetes pathophysiology

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This review focuses on the role of autophagy and mitophagy in maintaining pancreatic β‐cell function and homeostasis. We discuss how genetic defects affecting these pathways contribute to the development of type 1, type 2, monogenic, and gestational diabetes. We further explore their potential as therapeutic targets. Created in BioRender.

Compensation for spindle’s axial thermal growth based on temperature variation on vertical machine tools

open access: yesAdvances in Mechanical Engineering, 2016
A new spindle’s axial thermal growth model based on temperature variation is proposed considering the limitations of spindle’s axial thermal growth model based on rotating speed.

Ligand‐dependent transcriptional heterogeneity in cell cycle gene expression delays G1/S entry

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
EGF and HRG induce distinct G1/S progression programs in ErbB2‐amplified BT474 breast cancer cells. Despite activating the potent ErbB2–ErbB3 heterodimer, HRG does not accelerate cell‐cycle entry. Instead, EGF promotes earlier restriction‐point passage via ERK–FOS signaling, whereas HRG activates the AKT–MYC axis, driving transcriptional heterogeneity ...

Finite element prediction of the ultimate axial load capacity of V-section band clamps [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Band clamps with a flat bottomed V-section are used to connect a pair of circular flanges to provide a joint with significant axial strength. Despite the wide application of Vband clamps, their behaviour is not fully understood and the ultimate axial ...

Development of a test-rig for exploring optimal conditions of small unmanned aerial vehicle co-axial rotor systems

open access: yes, 2010
Due to the recent increase in development and use of co-axial rotor system at the scale of small UAVs a greater understanding of the performance variables that affect the co-axial propulsion system at low Reynolds number operation has become increasingly

Investigating the mechanical properties and crashworthiness of hybrid PLA/GFRP composites fabricated using FDM-filament winding

open access: yesHeliyon
The failure and crashworthiness performance of hybrid Polylactide (PLA)/Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) composite tubes subjected to axial and radial quasistatic compression loads were investigated in the present study.

Effect of Axial Pressure on Lime-Treated Expansive Soil Subjected to Wetting and Drying Cycles

open access: yesAdvances in Civil Engineering, 2019
The impact of seasonal moisture variation on subgrade soil, including lime-treated expansive soil, has been investigated in many studies. However, when performing wetting and drying cycles, the effect of stress, which decides the behavior and mechanical ...

Functional comparison of EncB and EncC cargo proteins in iron storage within the Myxococcus xanthus encapsulin

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Encapsulins are protein nanocompartments that play an important role in iron storage. In the Myxococcus xanthus encapsulin system, two cargo proteins called EncB and EncC contribute to iron mineralization. Here, we show that EncB and EncC generate iron‐containing minerals with distinct chemical compositions, suggesting that the composition of stored ...

Structural and biochemical analysis of a B12 superbinder

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
BtuG proteins are vitamin B12 scavengers in Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron, a dominant human gut bacterium. We present crystal structures of three BtuG homologs bound to cobalamin and its precursor cobinamide, revealing picomolar binding affinities, among the highest known for any natural protein.

Artificial molecular machines and motors—Design and control of nanoscale motion

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Molecules are constantly moving because of thermal fluctuations, but random motion alone cannot be exploited to perform directional tasks. Artificial molecular machines use chemical, electrical, or light energy to bias this motion. Molecular shuttles, rotary motors, and supramolecular pumps illustrate how nanoscale movement can be controlled and ...
