Surface modification of the AZ91 magnesium alloy

Archives of Civil and Mechanical Engineering, 2015
The main purpose of the study was to modify the surface layer of the AZ91 magnesium alloys with the use of the GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding) method. The remelting process was conducted with the use of an AC current with the concurrent cooling of the magnesium alloy in the liquid nitrogen bath.

Fracture behavior of AZ91 magnesium alloy

Materials Letters, 2000
Abstract Optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to examine the fracture behavior of AZ91 magnesium alloy ruptured by tensile and impact tests. AZ91 alloy generally revealed features of brittle fracture and cleavage is the principal fracture mode.

The Origin of Microporosity in Magnesium Alloy AZ91

SAE Technical Paper Series, 1994
<div class="htmlview paragraph">The persistent occurrence of microporosity defects in AZ91 castings has made it difficult to consistently produce sound parts. Earlier work established that dissolved hydrogen gas causes microporosity defects in AZ91; however, the exact role of hydrogen in the nucleation and growth of microporosity was not ...

Corrosion performance of magnesium alloys MEZ and AZ91

International Journal of Cast Metals Research, 2000
The corrosion performance of sand cast MEZ(S), zirconium-grain-refined MEZ(R), sand cast AZ91(S), and high pressure diecast AZ91(D) magnesium alloys were evaluated by means of salt spray testing, optical metallography, hydrogen evolution, polarisation curve measurement and AC impedance spectroscopy. The results show that the corrosion resistance of the

Inverted disk centrifugal atomization of AZ91 magnesium alloy

Canadian Metallurgical Quarterly, 1997
Abstract Magnesium AZ91 alloy powder was produced by centrifugal atomization under various conditions using an inverted disk atomizer. The particle size distribution was obtained as a function of the disk shape and rotation speed. The microstructure of particles and their shape were examined and characterized.

Corrosion characteristics of AZ91 magnesium alloy weldments

Materials Research Innovations, 2009
Abstract The welding of AZ91 magnesium alloy was carried out using hybrid welding. The relationships between the microstructures and corrosion behaviours of AZ91 magnesium alloy weldments were investigated. The microstructure was examined using optical microscopy, electron probe microanalysis, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis.

Corrosion Resistance of RE-AZ91 Magnesium Alloys

Advanced Materials Research, 2014
Rare Earth (RE) were added to industrial AZ91 magnesium alloy, so that RE-AZ91 Mg alloy was produced by the process of die casting, so as to study the effect of RE on corrosion resistance and tensile strength of Mg alloy. The experiment results show that RE addition could improve the tensile strength and corrosion resistance of magnesium alloy at a ...

Damping behaviour of AZ91 magnesium alloy with cracks

Materials Science and Engineering: A, 2004
Abstract The amplitude-dependent damping of a commercial magnesium cast alloy AZ91 was determined at room temperature by measurement of the logarithmic decrement of free decaying vibrations of bending beams clamped at one side. In order to generate cracks in the specimens they were subjected to (1) isochronal heat treatments for 1 h at temperatures ...

Study on mechanical properties of AZ91 magnesium alloy

Materials Today: Proceedings, 2022
Abstract The lightest structural metal present on Earth’s surface is Magnesium (Mg). Mg is very useful for many applications like automobile, aeronautical etc. Mg has many limitations and because of which it cannot be used directly as a replacement of steel and aluminum.

Interdependence of Hydrogen and Microporosity in Magnesium Alloy AZ91

SAE Technical Paper Series, 1993
<div class="htmlview paragraph">The relationship between hydrogen gas and microporosity in magnesium alloy AZ91 was quantified, refuting the belief that hydrogen levels less than the maximum solid solubility are of no detriment. Sand castings were made from melts containing measured levels of hydrogen gas, and the amount of porosity was ...
