The aim of this study was to characterize the turfosa form of Pinus sylvestris from the Gazwa peat bog reserve in terms of 16 anatomical needle traits and to determine whether pines with a typical morphotype inhabiting the peat bog have been so ...

Impact of Nitrogen Deposition on Carbon and Nitrogen Cycling in Peatlands Under Land‐Use Change
ABSTRACT Increasing nitrogen (N) deposition significantly alters carbon and N dynamics in peatlands by affecting microbial processes, enhancing greenhouse gas emissions and nutrient leaching into adjacent waters. However, how peatland conversion for agriculture and forestry influences the fate of added N under elevated atmospheric deposition remains ...

ABSTRACT Only ~3% of the global land surface is covered by peatlands, yet more than one‐third of global soil carbon is stored in these ecosystems and contaminant filtration can be provided. The extent to which peat humification (Fibric–Hemic–Sapric) is linked to dissolved heavy metals in peatland surface waters has remained poorly quantified at a ...

A simple index for assessing cumulative human impacts on mountain lakes
Abstract Mountain lakes are highly sensitive ecosystems and effective sentinels of environmental change, yet the exposure and magnitude of the human footprint remain poorly quantified. In this study, we develop a simple and non‐invasive abiotic index to assess cumulative pressures on mountain lakes. The proposed index integrates eight variables grouped

A new species of Lentibulariaceae, Pinguicula brendae Rodríguez‐Ramírez, H.Shimai & A.R. Andrés‐Hernández, is described based on its unique morphological characteristics. This species is restricted to limestone rock walls in the San Bartolo Tutotepec municipality, central‐eastern Hidalgo, Mexico, where it inhabits a single locality on vertical, north ...

Dynamics of methane fluxes from two peat bogs in the Ore Mountains, Czech Republic
Methane fluxes were studied at two high-elevation oligotrophic peat bogs in the Ore Mts., Czech Republic. The Bukova dolina Bog was drained 15 years ago and 2 years ago was partly restored, whereas the Brumiste Bog is an intact peatland.

Both density‐ and frequency‐dependent effects determine plant growth in a dune heath ecosystem
We tested the hypothesis that both density‐ and frequency‐dependent interactions play important roles in determining plant growth in a dune heath ecosystem at several levels of available nitrogen. Plant growth was measured using the pin‐point method in a five‐block experiment with four nitrogen levels.

Carbon dioxide emission from raised bog surface after peat extraction
Research on CO2 emission from a raised bog after completion of peat extraction was performed in 2011–2013. CO2 emissions were determined by the chamber method.

The importance of wild meat and freshwater fish for children's nutritional intake in the Congo Basin
Abstract Wild meat and freshwater fish are widely consumed in the Congo Basin, but in some areas, they are at risk of disappearing due to unsustainable hunting and fishing and changes in their habitat. Wild meat is also at risk of being eliminated from local diets due to potential policy changes such as wild meat bans.
