Selective Subtraction: An Extension of Background Subtraction [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Background subtraction or scene modeling techniques model the background of the scene using the stationarity property and classify the scene into two classes of foreground and background.

TRPM4 contributes to cell death in prostate cancer tumor spheroids, and to extravasation and metastasis in a zebrafish xenograft model system

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Transient receptor potential melastatin‐4 (TRPM4) is overexpressed in prostate cancer (PCa). Knockout of TRPM4 resulted in reduced PCa tumor spheroid size and decreased PCa tumor spheroid outgrowth. In addition, lack of TRPM4 increased cell death in PCa tumor spheroids.

Seeing jets in heavy-ion collisions [PDF]

open access: yesNucl.Phys.A855:32-37,2011, 2011
In these proceedings, we briefly review how jets can be reconstructed in heavy-ion collisions. The main point we address is the subtraction of the large contamination from the underlying event background. We first present the main ingredients needed to define the jets and perform the background subtraction and then discuss the efficiency of the ...

Machine Learning on data with sPlot background subtraction

open access: yes, 2019
Data analysis in high energy physics often deals with data samples consisting of a mixture of signal and background events. The sPlot technique is a common method to subtract the contribution of the background by assigning weights to events.

Clinical significance of stratifying prostate cancer patients through specific circulating genes

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We tested a specific panel of genes representative of luminal, neuroendocrine and stem‐like cells in the blood of prostate cancer patients, showing predictive value from diagnosis to late stages of disease. This approach allows monitoring of treatment responses and outcomes at specific time points in trajectories.

Background subtraction in electron Compton spectroscopy [PDF]

open access: yesMicron, 2022
Compton scattering in electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) is used to quantify the momentum distribution of occupied electronic states in a solid. The Compton signal is a broad feature with a width of several hundred eV. Furthermore, the weak intensity results in a low peak-to-background ratio.

Respiratory complex I‐mediated NAD+ regeneration regulates cancer cell proliferation through the transcriptional and translational control of p21Cip1 expression by SIRT3 and SIRT7

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
NAD+ regeneration by mitochondrial complex I NADH dehydrogenase is important for cancer cell proliferation. Specifically, NAD+ is necessary for the activities of NAD+‐dependent deacetylases SIRT3 and SIRT7, which suppress the expression of p21Cip1 cyclin‐dependent kinase inhibitor, an antiproliferative molecule, at the translational and transcriptional

Dynamic ARMA-Based Background Subtraction for Moving Objects Detection

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2019
Background subtraction is a prevailing method for moving object detection in videos with stationary backgrounds. However, accurate and real-time moving object detection is challenging in the presence of complex dynamic scenes. This paper presents a novel
