Ionospheric structure from oblique‐backscatter soundings

Radio Science, 1973
Oblique ionograms are made monostatically by using an HF sounder to record the delay times of echoes from known ground targets as a function of operating frequency. Cooperative sources, such as repeaters, or distinctive terrain features, such as cities, serve effectively as known ground targets.

Automatic processing and interpretation of backscatter ionosphere sounding ionograms

SPIE Proceedings, 2016
We present techniques and algorithms for processing and interpretation of backscatter ionosphere sounding ionograms received on chirp ionosonde. The processing of experimental ionograms is carried out on the basis of basic data filtration with the subsequent compression by method of the cellular automaton.

Real‐Time Techniques for Interpretation of Ionospheric Backscatter Sounding Data

Radio Science, 2019
AbstractWe present techniques and algorithms for automatic processing and interpretation of data of ionospheric backscatter sounding (BS) using a continuous chirp signal. Experimental ionograms are processed based on data filtration with further compression using the cellular automaton method.

The investigation of signal shape for backscatter ionosphere sounding by continuous chirp signal

26th International Symposium on Atmospheric and Ocean Optics, Atmospheric Physics, 2020
The results of signal shape study for backscatter ionosphere sounding (BS) depending on conditions of radio waves propagation and electric properties of earth surface are given. The experimental BS data obtained in different seasons of the year on the basis of multifunctional chirp ionosonde developed in ISTP SB RAS were analyzed.

Development of a Method for Determining the Position of Artificial Ionospheric Irreguliarities Responsible for the Radio-Wave Aspect-Angle Scattering on Short Paths by Oblique Backscatter Sounding Ionograms

Izvestiya vysshikh uchebnykh zavedenii. Radiofizika, 2021
The data of experiments on the oblique backscatter sounding of the heated ionospheric volume above the Sura facility on a short Kazan—Vasilsursk—Kazan path, when the Cyclone-GPS ionosonde was operated in the ionogram recording regime in the frequency range 1–7 MHz with a step of about 20 kHz are compared with the results of ray-tracing calculations for

Application of Wuhan Ionospheric Oblique Backscattering Sounding System (WIOBSS) for the investigation of midlatitude ionospheric irregularities

Advances in Space Research, 2018
Abstract An upgrade of Wuhan Ionospheric Backscattering Sounding System (WIOBSS) was developed in 2015. Based on the Universal Serial Bus (USB), and a high performance FPGA, the newly designed WIOBSS has a completely digital structure, which makes it portable and flexible.

The determination of ionosphere parameters on the base of backscatter sounding data

23rd International Symposium on Atmospheric and Ocean Optics: Atmospheric Physics, 2017
The results of operative diagnostics for ionosphere on the base of backscatter sounding received via chirp ionosonde are presented. The results of identification for registered signals and creation of tracks are basic data for determination of maximum usable frequencies and distant-frequency characteristics of one-hop mode 1F2 for oblique propagation ...

The Real-time Diagnostics of HF Radio Channel on the Base of Ionospheric Backscatter Sounding Data

2020 XXXIIIrd General Assembly and Scientific Symposium of the International Union of Radio Science, 2020
The method of real-time diagnostics for decameter radio channel on the base ionosphere backscatter sounding data by continuous chirp signal is presented. The method is based on the extraction of the backscatter signal leading edge under processing and interpretation of experimental ionograms.

Investigation of Low-Latitude Ionospheric Field-Aligned Irregularities by Oblique Backscatter Sounding

IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Letters, 2010
The ionosphere is not homogeneous, hosting many irregularities with different scales from dozens of meters to dozens of kilometers. The observation and formation mechanism of the irregularities is among the most active domains for understanding the influence of irregularities on propagation of radio waves.
