The unique characteristics of bacterial communities on plastic debris and microplastics in the environment have been widely studied in recent years. However, due to the randomness of sampling, it is hard to identify whether the unique characteristics of bacterial communities on plastic debris is due to the plastics as substrate itself, or the ...

Deconvoluting Interspecies Bacterial Communication
Angewandte Chemie International Edition, 2012The universal bacterial signal molecule autoinducer-2 (AI-2) is derived from 4,5-dihydroxy-2,3-pentanedione (DPD). DPD exists in a complex equilibrium between multiple forms, and NMR spectroscopy has now been used to establish that the extent of the structural diversity displayed by DPD over a broad pH range is even greater than previously posited.

Bacterial Networks in Cells and Communities
Journal of Molecular Biology, 2015Research on the bacterial regulatory networks is currently experiencing a true revival, driven by advances in methodology and by emergence of novel concepts. The biannual conference Bacterial Networks (BacNet15) held in May 2015, in Sant Feliu de Guíxols, Spain, covered progress in the studies of regulatory networks that control bacterial physiology ...

Community-acquired bacterial pneumonias
Seminars in Respiratory Infections, 2000Community-acquired bacterial pneumonias are among the most common of infectious diseases. The diagnosis of the etiological agent is becoming more challenging and more critical as new organisms are recognized as pathogens, and as well established agents become increasingly resistant to antimicrobial agents.

Complexity in the Bacterial Community
Science Signaling, 2008Biofilms are organized communities of bacteria that form on surfaces. The bacterial population of a biofilm exhibits enhanced resistance to environmental stress and antibiotics, which has important implications for the clinic and industry. Vlamakis et al .

The term community has been used in a number of different ways by ecologists (cf. Krebs, 1985; Diamond and Case, 1986). Indeed, Roughgarden and Diamond (1986) state that “... a natural unambiguous definition of communities does not exist.” They further state that the most inclusive definition of a community is “all the organisms in a prescribed area ...

Neutral assembly of bacterial communities.
FEMS microbiology ecology, 2007Two recent, independent advances in ecology have generated interest and controversy: the development of neutral community models (NCMs) and the extension of biogeographical relationships into the microbial world. Here these two advances are linked by predicting an observed microbial taxa-volume relationship using an NCM and provide the strongest ...

Bacterial Community in the Inoculum
2013Although our previous studies indicated the two heterotrophic-autotrophic denitrification permeable reactive barriers (HAD PRBs) contained heterotrophic and autotrophic denitrifying bacteria and aerobic heterotrophs, convincing molecular and biochemical evidence for their existence is lacking and the bacterial communities remain largely unknown.
