Aquatic Bacterial Diversity, Community Composition and Assembly in the Semi-Arid Inner Mongolia Plateau: Combined Effects of Salinity and Nutrient Levels

open access: yesMicroorganisms, 2021
Due to the recent decades of climate change and intensive human activities, endorheic lakes are threatened by both salinization and eutrophication. However, knowledge of the aquatic bacterial community’s response to simultaneous increasing salinity and ...

Extractable nitrogen and microbial community structure respond to grassland restoration regardless of historical context and soil composition. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Grasslands have a long history of invasion by exotic annuals, which may alter microbial communities and nutrient cycling through changes in litter quality and biomass turnover rates.

Dispersal alters bacterial diversity and composition in a natural community [PDF]

open access: yesThe ISME Journal, 2017
Abstract Dispersal is central to the evolution and maintenance of microbial diversity. Quantifying microbial dispersal and its role in shaping communities remains a challenge, however. Here, we manipulated a bacterial community’s dispersal rate in a grassland ecosystem and test whether this altered diversity and composition.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Transition of Ethiopian highland forests to agriculture-dominated landscapes shifts the soil microbial community composition

open access: yesBMC Ecology, 2018
Background Land use changes and related land management practices significantly alter soil physicochemical properties; however, their effects on the soil microbial community structure are still unclear.

Land use intensification in the humid tropics increased both alpha and beta diversity of soil bacteria [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Anthropogenic pressures on tropical forests are rapidly intensifying, but our understanding of their implications for biological diversity is still very limited, especially with regard to soil biota, and in particular soil bacterial communities.

Composition of humic acid-degrading estuarine and marine bacterial communities [PDF]

open access: yesFEMS Microbiology Ecology, 2012
We examined the bacterial decomposition of humic acids (HA) in two flow-through culture experiments, one inoculated by marine and one by estuarine bacterial communities. In both experiments, the cultures were fed with HA media of salinities of 28 and 14, close to their ambient and a distinctly different, foreign salinity. HA were decomposed to > 60% of

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

Effects of short-term nitrogen and phosphorus addition on soil bacterial community of different halophytes

open access: yesmSphere
Soil microbial community composition and diversity are often affected by nutrient enrichment, which may influence soil microbes to affect nutrient cycling and plant community structure.

Temporal and Spatial Impact of Human Cadaver Decomposition on Soil Bacterial and Arthropod Community Structure and Function [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
As vertebrate carrion decomposes, there is a release of nutrient-rich fluids into theunderlying soil, which can impact associated biological community structure andfunction. How these changes alter soil biogeochemical cycles is relatively unknown and may
