Microbial profile of the appendix niche in acute appendicitis: a novel sampling approach

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This study utilized a novel sampling method, ERAT (i.e. endoscopic retrograde appendicitis treatment)‐guided lumen aspiration, to obtain samples from the appendix, and shotgun metagenomic sequencing was performed for in situ characterization of the appendix microbiome in patients with acute appendicitis.

Toxin data quality: a critical examination of bacterial exotoxins and animal toxins

open access: yesBMC Research Notes
Objective Existing toxins datasets include a mixture of proteins and toxin peptides. In this study we present two curated datasets of toxic proteins free of associated proteins: bacterial exotoxins and animal toxins.

Research progress on the metabolic transformation of Shenling Baizhu San under the influence of the gut microbiota

open access: yesAdvanced Chinese Medicine, EarlyView.
Abstract The gut microbiota plays a pivotal role in maintaining host metabolic homeostasis and overall physiological functions. Shenling Baizhu San (SLBZS), a time‐honored classical prescription for tonifying Qi, strengthening the spleen, removing dampness, and arresting diarrhea, has shown broad clinical efficacy in digestive disorders.

Unlocking the Power of Quercetin‐Encapsulated Mesoporous Bioactive Glass Nanoparticles: A Multifunctional Approach to Bone Regeneration

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticles (MBGNs) are investigated for bone regeneration given their remarkable structural and functional properties. MBGNs are functionalized with Mn and Cu and incorporated with quercetin, a natural flavonoid exhibiting antioxidant, anti‐inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties.

Overview of Bacterial Protein Toxins from Pathogenic Bacteria: Mode of Action and Insights into Evolution

open access: yesToxins
Bacterial protein toxins are secreted by certain bacteria and are responsible for mild to severe diseases in humans and animals. They are among the most potent molecules known, which are active at very low concentrations. Bacterial protein toxins exhibit

Glycan-dependent cell adhesion mechanism of Tc toxins

open access: yesNature Communications, 2020
Although Tc toxins are a major class of bacterial toxin translocation systems, little is known about their receptor binding. Here, the authors identify heparins/heparan sulfates and Lewis antigens as receptors for different Tc toxins, determine cryo-EM ...

Deciphering the Origin of Higher Shell Coordination on Single Iron Catalysts for Resilient Modulating Persulfate Oxidation Into Singlet Oxygen Pathway

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, Volume 35, Issue 12, March 18, 2025.
This study reveals that higher shell S coordination can effectively modulate the spin state of FeN4 site via long‐range electronic interactions, giving rise to the oriented generation of singlet oxygen from peroxymonosulfate activation. Abstract Precise manipulation of coordination structure of single‐atom sites and establishment of schematic ...

Bacterial Genotoxins: Merging the DNA Damage Response into Infection Biology

open access: yesBiomolecules, 2015
Bacterial genotoxins are unique among bacterial toxins as their molecular target is DNA. The consequence of intoxication or infection is induction of DNA breaks that, if not properly repaired, results in irreversible cell cycle arrest (senescence) or ...
