Metronidazole in prevention and treatment of bacteroides infections after appendicectomy. [PDF]

open access: yesBMJ, 1976
The frequency of non-clostridial anaerobic infection was studied in 95 patients who had undergone acute appendicectomy: 49 received prophylactic metronidazole and 46 received placebo. Anaerobic infection did not develop in any of the metronidazole-treated patients, but infections did develop in nine (19%) of the 46 controls.

The Emergence of Bacteroides pyogenes as a Human Pathogen of Animal Origin: A Narrative Review [PDF]

open access: yesMicroorganisms
Bacteroides pyogenes is a Gram-negative obligate anaerobe rod. It is naturally found in the oral microbiome of cats and dogs, which represents a primary source of disease for humans. The present review provides an update on the role of B.

Bacteroides Infection among Hospital Patients [PDF]

open access: bronzeBMJ, 1973
In an 18-month period a total of 118 isolates of Bacteroides species, mainly Bacteroides fragilis, were grown from 112 hospital patients with various conditions. The infections were severe and were associated with serious operations such as intestinal surgery for carcinoma and postpartum hysterectomy.

Chemotherapy of an Experimental Bacteroides fragilis Infection in Mice [PDF]

open access: greenAntimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy, 1977
The efficacies of five common antimicrobial agents were determined for a pure Bacteroides fragilis infection in mice. Therapy was begun 4 h after bacterial injection and given every 8 h thereafter for 5 days. Blood levels were determined over an 8-h period for each concentration of antibiotic tested. Clindamycin and
