Ferrite and bainite in alloy steels

Metallurgical Transactions, 1972
The addition of alloying elements even in small concentrations can alter the properties and structure of ferrite and bainite. The various morphologies of ferrite-carbide aggregates are surveyed including alloy pearlite, fibrous carbide eutectoids and precipitation of fine alloy carbides atγ-α interfaces.

Morphology of bainite and widmanstätten ferrite

Metallurgical and Materials Transactions A, 1994
Morphology of bainite and Widmanstatten ferrite in various steels has been investigated by means of microstructural and surface relief observations. It was shown that upper and lower bainite should be classified by ferrite morphology,i.e., lathlike or platelike, and that the morphology of cementite precipitation cannot be the index for the ...

Formation mechanism of bainitic ferrite and carbide

Metallurgical and Materials Transactions A, 1994
Superledges on the broad faces of bainitic ferrite plates have been observed with transmission electron microscope (TEM). The observed superledges, ranging from less than 1 to 24 nm in height, are imaged in three dimension by way of tilt operation under TEM.

Lengthening kinetics of ferrite and bainite sideplates

Metallurgical Transactions, 1973
The rate of lengthening of ferrite and bainite sideplates and the radius of curvature of the plate edges were measured as a function of reaction temperature in three Fe-C alloys. These data were analyzed on the basis of an equation due to Trivedi. The analysis proved that the mobility of the sideplate edges is limited.

The Nanohardness of Acicular Ferrite and Bainitic Ferrite in Low Carbon Microalloying Steel

Materials Science Forum, 2007
Dynamic continuous stiffness measurement (CSM) nanoindentation method was applied to measure nanohardness in low carbon microalloying steel. The matrix hardness for quenched phase and acicular ferrite calculated through analysis of curves is less fluctuated than the raw results, which shows that the analysis of the curves is helpful for determining ...

Transformation of austenite into bainitic ferrite and martensite

Steel Research, 1996
The stress induced martensitic transformation in the upper metastable intermediate state of γ-α-transformation in ferrous materials, structured as ferritic bainite, is discussed. The fibrous structured ferritic bainite consists of retained austenite and ferrite platelets growing in the [111]α//[101]γ direction.

Morphology and growth process of bainitic ferrite in steels

Metals and Materials, 1998
The morphologies and the formation mechanisms of isothermally transformed Widmanstatten ferrite and bainite in various steels were investigated. Widmanstatten ferrite often grew from the grain boundary ferrite allotriomorph formed by a diffusional mechanism in the temperature range of the upper C-curve, whereas, bainite grew directly from an austenite ...

The influence of carbide formation in ferrite on the bainitic type transformation

Computational Materials Science, 2021
Abstract The effect of carbide formation on the development of the bainitic type transformation was studied using phase field modeling. The phase field model incorporated the displacive structural transformation producing a misfitting product phase, long range elastic interactions, carbon partitioning from austenite and ferrite and the formation of ...

New Insights into Carbon Distribution in Bainitic Ferrite*

HTM Journal of Heat Treatment and Materials, 2018
Abstract A number of studies on bainite transformation at low temperature have revealed that bainitic ferrite formed super-saturated in carbon. The most sensible explanation to this is the increased solubility of a tetragonal ferrite lattice, by virtue of synchrotron radiation and X-ray diffraction results, as well as ab-initio ...

Comparison of the fatigue performance of ferrite–pearlite and ferrite–bainite dual-phase steels

Journal of Marine Science and Technology, 2020
Recent demands for large vessels and deep water exploration have increased the requirements for thicker plates to ensure the sufficient strength of such structures. The use of thicker plates, however, has an adverse influence on the fatigue performance.
