A new maximum age observed within the family Labridae, ballan wrasse Labrus bergylta

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology
AbstractBallan wrasse Labrus bergylta is the largest species of wrasse inhabiting European waters and one of the longest‐living species within the family Labridae. A large specimen was caught off the coast of Skjerjehamn, western Norway (total length = 410 mm; weight = 1274 g).

The effect of different live feeds and water qualities on growth, survival, ossification and skeletal anomalies of ballan wrasse (Labrus bergylta) larvae [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Salmon lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) infections is one of the major problems in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) aquaculture. This has led to an increasing interest in the cultivation of ballan wrasse (Labrus bergylta), for cleaner fish purposes.

Policies to promote breeding for lice‐resistant salmon: Incentives designed for resilient and sustainable growth in aquaculture

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, Volume 106, Issue 1, Page 20-32, January 2025.
Abstract Sea lice represent a persistent and growing problem, challenging the resilience and growth of the salmon aquaculture industry. In this Norwegian case study, we studied and discuss how the absence of policy instruments directed at stimulating breeding for lice resistance (LR) might be explained.

Effects of different live feed on ballan wrasse (Labrus bergylta) larval hepatocyte and enterocyte development [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Salmon lice infestations are one of the biggest challenges for Norwegian salmon farming today. Delousing agents have been the solution to these infestations in the past, but overuse and wrong dosages have caused the lice to become resistant to the ...

Exposed Aquaculture Operations: Strategies for Safety and Fish Welfare

open access: yesReviews in Aquaculture, Volume 17, Issue 1, January 2025.
ABSTRACT The expansion of aquaculture production into more exposed harsh and remote ocean environments presents both new opportunities and challenges. To manage the complexities of exposed operations, research into fish welfare, personnel safety, and facilitating technology is thus of key importance.

Degumming of Ballan wrasse (Labrus bergylta) eggs

open access: yes, 2022

Development of a water-stable agar-based diet for the supplementary feeding of cleaner fish ballan wrasse (Labrus bergylta) deployed within commercial Atlantic salmon (Salmon salar) net-pens [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
The aim of this project was to develop a water-stable and palatable diet for the supplementary feeding of wrasse deployed in salmon sea-pens using a gelling agent mixed with a manufactured dry-feed component.

Ballan wrasse (Labrus bergylta) Larvae and Live-Feed Quality; Effects on Growth and Expression of Genes related to Mitochondrial Functions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Salmon production is threatened by sea louse Lepoptheirus salmonis, affecting both the environment and the industry?s economy. Use of the cleaner fish ballan wrasse (Labrus bergylta) is a promising method of salmon delousing with good results.
