Potential effects of abiotic factors on the abundance and distribution of the plankton in the Western Harbour, south-eastern Mediterranean Sea, Egypt

open access: yesOceanologia, 2015
Samples were collected seasonally from Western Harbour during winter 2012–winter 2013 to examine spatial and temporal variability in phytoplankton and zooplankton abundance in relation to physicochemical parameters. Water was alkaline and well oxygenated.

EU shipping in the dawn of managing the ballast water issue

open access: yesMarine Pollution Bulletin, 2008
After almost two decades of intensified research, regulatory and political activities focussed on the prevention of harmful organisms and pathogen transfers around the world in 2004 the International Convention on the Management of Ships' Ballast Water and Sediments (BWM Convention) was adopted to provide a common and globally uniform ballast water ...

Development of a protocol for sampling and analysis of ballast water in Jamaica

open access: yesRevista de Biología Tropical, 2014
The transfer of ballast by the international shipping industry has negatively impacted the environment. To design such a protocol for the area, the ballast water tanks of seven bulk cargo vessels entering a Jamaican port were sampled between January 28 ...

Genomic and Microscopic Analysis of Ballast Water in the Great Lakes Region

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2019
Invasive aquatic species can have damaging effects on fisheries and aquaculture through significant, and irreversible, effects on biodiversity. Human health may also be affected.

Ship Ballast Water Management in Turkish Ports and Waterways

open access: yesMarine Technology Society Journal, 2011
AbstractThe introduction of invasive marine species into a new environment by ballast water attached to ship hulls has been identified as one of the four greatest threats to the world’s oceans. The other three are land-based sources of marine pollution, overexploitation of living marine resources, and physical alteration/destruction of marine habitat.

Technical considerations for sampling ballast water to determine compliance with discharge performance standards

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science
In order to discharge ballast in waters of the USA and Member States of the IMO, a vessel must comply with ballast water discharge standards (BWDS). In most cases, this involves use of a Type-Approved ballast water management system (BWMS).
