Ship board testing of a deoxygenation ballast water treatment
Marine Pollution Bulletin, 2007A ship board trial of a deoxygenation method for treating ballast water was carried out during a voyage from Southampton (United Kingdom) to Manzanillo (Panama). A nutrient solution added to two ballast tanks encouraged bacterial growth, resulting in a gradual change to an anoxic environment.

Filtration as a Ballast Water Treatment Measure
2002Filtration has been proposed as a ballast treatment in both shipboard and shore-based applications. Operated at the port of origin, filtration can dramatically reduce densities of larger plankton and other taxa in the ballast intake stream without generating chemical or thermal residuals.

Ship ballast water ultrasonic treatment
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2002Ballast water is treated by applying ultrasonic frequencies to the water to kill organisms entrained in the water such as diatoms, veligers, fish larvae, plankton, and microorganisms, preventing the introduction of non-indigenous species between ports-of-call. The ballast water is circulated through a ballast treatment system.

Disinfection of Water by Ultrasound: Application to Ballast Water Treatment
2006Abstract : Ultrasound has potential application in disinfecting a variety of water streams, including shipboard ballast water to avoid transfer of non-indigenous species between geographic locations. Two approaches for improving the performance of ultrasound in disinfecting bacteria were examined: 1) optimizing the ultrasonic intensity by varying the ...

Science of The Total Environment, 2019
Effects of ballast water (BW) treatment by ultra-violet (UV) light and electrochlorination (EC) on survival, activity and diversity of marine bacterioplankton and release of organic matter from cell damage were examined at discharge in a large-scale BW test facility (250 m3 tanks) at Hundested harbour, Denmark.

Heating techniques in ballast water treatment
2013Ballast water is recognized as a vector for transference of various species from one geographical region to others, all around the world. Consequences are influence on ecology of species in the environment where ballast water is discharged, with the possible impact on human health and/or economy.

Heating Methods of Water Ballast Treatment on- Board
2008Alohtonus organisms relased into sea with water ballast exert a harmful influence onto biodiversity, shore industry, and human health. This paper describes the possibilities for aplication of heating methods in water ballast treatment. Proposals for heating treatment and continuous washing of tanks, heating treatment with recirculation and heating ...

Ballast water treatment systems in vessels
