Predictive models and experiments for high-velocity and high-temperature impacts in Inconel-alloy panels

open access: yesMaterials & Design, 2019
The behavior of Inconel 718 and 617 panels on the high-speed impact perforation mode at elevated temperatures and ballistic impact limit is here investigated using experimental and numerical methods.

Computational analysis of projectile impact resistance on aluminium (a356) curvilinear surface reinforced with carbon nanotubes (cnts) for applications in systems of protection [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Computational tests for ballistic impact energy absorption were developed on A356/CNTs composite material with the goal of estimating the improvement of the material’s mechanical properties by the contribution of the CNTs [1].

Ballistic nanofriction

open access: yes, 2010
Sliding parts in nanosystems such as Nano ElectroMechanical Systems (NEMS) and nanomotors, increasingly involve large speeds, and rotations as well as translations of the moving surfaces; yet, the physics of high speed nanoscale friction is so far ...

Comparison of Numerical Simulation Techniques of Ballistic Ceramics under Projectile Impact Conditions

open access: yesMaterials, 2021
This article presents an analysis of the effectiveness of available numerical techniques in mapping the characteristic behavior of ballistic ceramics under projectile impact conditions. As part of the work, the ballistic tests were performed on the layered ceramic/steel composite armor and tested with the 7.62 × 39 mm, armor-piercing incendiary (API ...

Cellular Snowballing: Cell Adhesion and Migration Drive the Self‐Assembly of Cell‐Microgel Biohybrid Spheroids

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A new class of biohybrid spheroids is engineered through the self‐assembly of adherent cells and extracellular matrix‐mimetic hydrogel microparticles (microgels). By mimicking a snowballing effect, this approach enables scalable formation of porous, millimeter‐scale spheroids with enhanced cell viability and molecular diffusion.

Dynamic response of UHMWPE plates under combined shock and fragment loading

open access: yesDefence Technology, 2023
Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fiber composite has been extensively used to construct lightweight protective structures against ballistic impacts, yet little is known about its performance when subjected to combined blast and fragment ...

Inherently Disordered Auxetic Metamaterials

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Inherently disordered auxetic metamaterials based on random chiral Delaunay triangulations are designed and investigated using numerical simulations and experimental tests. These disordered frameworks exhibit orthotropic behavior and a large negative Poisson's ratio (ca.

Mechanical analysis of helmeted headforms under ballistic impact with implications in performance evaluation of ballistic helmets

open access: yesFrontiers in Mechanical Engineering, 2023
Behind helmet blunt trauma is a significant health concern in modern warfare. The ballistic response of the human head under ballistic impact is highly sought. Towards this end, we conducted ballistic experiments on three different headforms.

Buried Unstrained Germanium Channels: A Lattice‐Matched Platform for Quantum Technology

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Strained germanium (ε$\varepsilon$‐Ge) and strained silicon (ε$\varepsilon$‐Si) buried quantum wells have enabled advanced spin‐qubit quantum processors. However, in the absence of suitable lattice‐matched substrates, ε$\varepsilon$‐Ge and ε$\varepsilon$‐Si are deposited on defective, metamorphic SiGe buffers, which may impact device ...

A NUMERICAL MODEL FOR BALLISTIC IMPACT RESPONSE OF COMPOSITE ARMORS

open access: yesHavacılık ve Uzay Teknolojileri Dergisi, 2018
In this study, we present a numerical model to simulate the ballistic impact of a rigid right circular cylinder (RCC) projectile into a woven fabric target.
