As a response to attack by herbivores, plants can emit a variety of volatile substances that attract natural enemies of these insect pests. Predators of the banana weevil, Cosmopolites sordidus (Germar) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) such as Dactylosternum abdominale (Coleoptera: Hydrophilidae) and Pheidole megacephala (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), are ...

Reduction of banana weevil populations with pseudostem traps
International Journal of Pest Management, 1994Abstract One‐week‐old traps made from split banana pseudostems were 1.5–1.7‐fold more attractive to adult banana weevils than 2–3‐week‐old traps. In one experiment, all available pseudostem material was used for trapping, and weekly collecting of weevils over an 11‐month trapping period led to a 50% reduction in weevil catches in one field.

Banana weevil borer control in south-eastern Queensland
Australian Journal of Experimental Agriculture, 1995Banana weevil borer Cosmopolites sordidus (Germar) is the main insect pest of bananas in south-eastern Queensland and northern New South Wales. Four trials were conducted over 3 years to test current and new pesticides and 2 species of entomopathogenic nematode Heterorhabditis zealandica Poinar (strain 327) and Steinernemu carpocapsae (Weiser) (strain ...

Relationships between nematodes, weevils, banana and plantain cultivars and damage
Annals of Applied Biology, 1993SUMMARYInfestation of banana and plantain suckers by nematodes (Pratylenchus good‐eyi, Radopholus similis and Helicotylenchus multicinctus) and weevils (Cosmopolites sordidus) increased with time from establishment in a field of eight different cultivars.

Evaluation of insecticdes and non-edible oils against Banana stem weevil
Indian Journal of Entomology, 2020The banana pseudostem weevil (BPW) Odoiporus longicollis (Oliver) (Coleoptera: Curculiondae) is a serious pest of banana. An experiment was conducted with cultivar Rasthali having eleven treatments during 2016 and 2017 to evaluate some insecticides and non-edible oils/cakes against BPW.

Migration potential of the banana weevil Cosmopolites sordidus
Agricultural and Forest Entomology, 2011The banana weevil Cosmopolites sordidus Germar (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) is a major pest in banana ( Musa spp.) growing areas. The weevil is known to be

This chapter discusses the impact of the banana weevil borer (Banana black weevil), Cosmopolites sordidus (Germar, 1824) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae). It provides an overview of the spread of the pest, its life cycle and the impact on plant health and yields. The chapter then discusses control measures.

Host plant resistance is an important tool in the management of the banana weevil Cosmopolites sordidus (Germar). Although ovipositing females do not discriminate between resistant and susceptible cultivars, plants of resistant cultivars have smaller larval populations and sustain less damage in the field.

Studies on the banana borer weevil in Cameroun
2002In Cameroon, bananas and plantains are major staple food for a large proportion of the population. A total of 1.7 million tonnes are produced annually. These crops are threatened by a wide range of pests and diseases among which the banana borer weevil (Cosmopolites sordidus) is the major insect pert.

Banana weevil trapping service
