New type of trap for monitoring banana weevil population [PDF]
The objective of this study was to test the efficiency of a new model of trap by comparing it with the most recommended and used traps by producers to monitor Cosmopolites sordidus in areas of production of plantains. Three types of vegetable traps were tested: cheese, modified roof tile and a new trap called wedge.

THE ELUSIVE BANANA WEEVIL COSMOPOLITES SORDIDUS GERMAR
The banana weevil Cosmopolites sordidus Germar, has evaded all efforts to manage it in all banana-based cropping systems except the commercial plantation banana system, where the 2 to 3 year crop cycle and the intensity of management limit the pest survival in that system.

Local and neighboring patch conditions alter sex‐specific movement in banana weevils [PDF]
AbstractUnderstanding the mechanisms underlying the movements and spread of a species over time and space is a major concern of ecology. Here, we assessed the effects of an individual's sex and the density and sex ratio of conspecifics in the local and neighboring environment on the movement probability of the banana weevil,Cosmopolites sordidus. In a “

Commodity risk assessment of Petunia spp. and Calibrachoa spp. unrooted cuttings from Uganda
Abstract The European Commission requested the EFSA Panel on Plant Health to evaluate the likelihood of pest freedom at entry in the EU, including both regulated and non‐regulated pests, potentially associated with unrooted cuttings of the genera Petunia and Calibrachoa produced under physical isolation in Uganda.

This study extracted edible oil and chitosan using both chemical and green extraction techniques, from four species of edible winged termites. Yield and efficiency of the extraction techniques were compared, the extracted products characterized for physico‐chemical properties, and the antimicrobial ability of chitosan assessed against a gram‐positive ...

Dissipation study of ten insecticides in apples under field conditions
Abstract BACKGROUND Apples are among the most widely cultivated fruits in temperate climate zone. Given the potential of pests and diseases to cause significant damage to fruit production, orchardists rely on using insecticides and fungicides in infested orchards to protect apple yields.

Banana weevil resistance and corm hardness in Musa germplasm
Banana weevil (Cosmopolites sordidus Germar) is a major limiting factor in the cultivation of plantains and bananas (Musa spp. L.) in sub-Saharan Africa. The larvae damage the crop by tunneling in the corm. Chemical control is feasible but not sustainable, whereas host plant resistance is safe and has long term benefits.

ABSTRACT The macauba palm (Acrocomia aculeata, Arecaceae) is a Neotropical native oil palm, increasingly important in Central and South America due to rising demand for raw materials and its potential for bioenergy. Understanding its pollinator ecology is crucial to identify new areas for cultivation. This study examines the structure of floral visitor

Deleterious effects of plant cystatins against the banana weevil Cosmopolites sordidus [PDF]
AbstractThe general potential of plant cystatins for the development of insect‐resistant transgenic plants still remains to be established given the natural ability of several insects to compensate for the loss of digestive cysteine protease activities.

Summary Biofortification of staple crops is a sustainable strategy to deliver essential micronutrients to impoverished populations in developing countries. Banana is a highly valued crop consumed by over 75% of Ugandans. However, the starchy green cooking bananas have very low levels of pro‐vitamin A (PVA) and heavy dietary reliance on them has been ...
