Genetic Improvement of Banana for Resistance to Xanthomonas Wilt in East Africa

open access: yesFood and Energy Security, Volume 14, Issue 1, January/February 2025.
ABSTRACT Banana (Musa spp.) is a staple food and income generation crop, feeding millions worldwide. However, the cultivation of bananas is challenging due to biotic and abiotic production constraints. Among these factors are pests and diseases, especially banana bacterial disease.

Field distribution of banana weevil Cosmopolites sordidus (Germar) adults in cooking banana stands in Uganda

open access: yesInternational Journal of Tropical Insect Science, 2004
The banana weevil, Cosmopolites sordidus (Germar), is a nocturnal insect that is not readily observed in banana fields. Knowledge on its distribution is essential for the design of management strategies that target the adult stage. Marked weevils were released into seven-year-old banana plots.

Endophytic Beauveria bassiana in banana (Musa spp.) reduces banana weevil (Cosmopolites sordidus) fitness and damage

open access: yesCrop Protection, 2008
Abstract The effect of endophytic Beauveria bassiana in banana ( Musa spp.) plants against the banana weevil Cosmopolites sordidus was examined in a screenhouse study in Uganda. Tissue-cultured banana plants (cv. Kibuzi, genome group EA-AAA) were inoculated by dipping roots in a B. bassiana suspension of 1.5 × 10 7  conidia/ml for 2 h.

Another tool in the toolbox: Aphid‐specific Wolbachia protect against fungal pathogens

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology, Volume 26, Issue 11, November 2024.
Wolbachia infected more than 80% of Pentalonia aphids sampled across the Hawaiian Islands and other locations. The aphid‐specific M‐supergroup strains of this symbiont protected against a specialist fungal pathogen, Pandora, but not the generalist pathogen Beauveria or the parasitoid Aphidius colemanii.

Commodity risk assessment of Petunia spp. and Calibrachoa spp. unrooted cuttings from Costa Rica

open access: yesEFSA Journal, Volume 22, Issue 11, November 2024.
Abstract The European Commission requested the EFSA Panel on Plant Health to evaluate the probability of entry of pests (likelihood of pest freedom at entry), including both regulated and non‐regulated pests, associated with unrooted cuttings of the genera Petunia and Calibrachoa produced under physical isolation in Costa Rica.

A Functional Analysis of Inflorescence Architecture in Musa L. (Musaceae)

open access: yesFood and Energy Security, Volume 13, Issue 5, September/October 2024.
ABSTRACT Inflorescence architecture underpins sexual reproduction in wild Musa species and productivity in edible banana cultivars. In a functional analysis, we identified the apical inflorescence and lateral ‘cushion’ meristems and the change in flower type as the three primary components that generate inflorescence architecture. Five genotypes of two
