By analogy to electron waves in a crystal, electromagnetic waves in a 3-D periodic dielectric structure should be described by band theory. The idea of photonic band structure1 is rapidly2–5 gaining acceptance. The concepts of reciprocal space, Brillouin zones, dispersion relations, Bloch wave functions, Van Hove singularities, etc., are now being ...

A calculation of the valence and conduction bands of diamond has been carried out, using a set of eight localized bond orbitals, four bonding and four antibonding, made up from simple tetrahedral orbitals. Bloch functions have been set up in the usual way and overlap among them neglected.

Global Band Structure and Near-Band-Edge States
physica status solidi (b), 1997The global band structure from ab-initio calculations using DFT-LDA concepts is presented and discussed for 2H, 3C, 4H, 6H, and 15R SiC in view of the different stacking sequences and point lattices of these polytypes. Details of the conduction and valence band structure close to the band edges are described by using {\bf k·p} models and thermal ...

The level structure of104Ag has been studied through the103Rh (α, 3nγ) reaction at Eα=40 and 45 MeV. The principal features of the proposed level scheme are in agreement with those obtained earlier through heavy ion reaction. Two quasiparttcle-plus-rotor model calculation has been performed, and the results are compared with experimental data.

Electromagnetic Band gap Structures
2007 IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society International Symposium, 2007Various features about the application of EBG materials in printed antenna design and electromagnetic scattering are presented and methods of analysis are introduced. It is shown that a microstrip antenna with EBG or PMC surface has a larger directivity and lower side and back lobe levels. Numerical results are presented.

A specific tool to investigate the very existence of quasiparticles is photoemission spectroscopy in which the time evolution of the system with one removed particle is measured, and when this state evolves as a coherent superposition of oscillations of approximately the same frequency, it corresponds to the propagation of a quasiparticle with a ...

The ability to change the energy-level structure of the gain medium through material and structure design is one of the unique properties of semiconductor lasers. To take full advantage of this capability, one needs to be able to predict the band structure that results from a particular material and structure combination.
