On the bias of variable bandwidth curve estimators

Biometrika, 1990
SUMMARY A major difficulty in understanding the properties of variable bandwidth methods (Breiman, Meisel & Purcell, 1977; Abramson, 1982) is that extremely lengthy and complex algebra is needed to assess the influence of bias. Indeed, the complexity is so great that it has forced investigators to use computer algebraic manipulation to determine ...

Available bandwidth estimation in public clouds

IEEE INFOCOM 2018 - IEEE Conference on Computer Communications Workshops (INFOCOM WKSHPS), 2018
Recent years have witnessed a rapid increase of public cloud adoption as a result of the growing user demands and numerous advantages of public cloud computing. However, the great benefits of public cloud computing come at the cost of little visibility of the underlying network resources. Motivated by the strong desire of users to gain more information

On the Security of Bottleneck Bandwidth Estimation Techniques

2009
Several wide-area services are increasingly relying on bottleneck bandwidth estimation tools to enhance their network performance. Selfish hosts have, therefore, considerable incentives to fake their bandwidths in order to increase their benefit in the network.

Local multiscale frequency and bandwidth estimation

Proceedings of 1st International Conference on Image Processing, 2002
This paper describes a robust algorithm for estimation of local signal frequency and bandwidth. The method is based on combining local estimates of instantaneous frequency over a large number of scales. The filters used are a set of lognormal quadrature wavelets. A novel feature is that an estimate of local frequency bandwidth can be obtained.

Bandwidth estimation of multispliced GRIN fibers

Applied Optics, 1982
In designing long-haul optical transmission systems, it is important to estimate the characteristics of multispliced long-distance fibers based on data from individual fiber units. In the case of graded-index fibers, however, the mechanism of modal dispersion is complicated and therefore the derivation of an available bandwidth prediction method is ...

Efficient bandwidth estimation for peer-to-peer systems

2011 IEEE International Conference on Peer-to-Peer Computing, 2011
Many peer-to-peer (P2P) systems require accurate information about their peer's available bandwidth, e.g., for load balancing. Determining this information is difficult, as a suitable approach must address two challenges. First, it must be able to deal with fluctuating bandwidth.

Feasibility of rapid critical bandwidth estimates

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1974
While partly influenced by critical bandwidth (CB), direct measures of auditory sensitivity such as pure-tone masked threshold and frequency-difference threshold reflect other factors as well. In an attempt to find a rapid direct estimation of CB, two experimental tasks were explored.

Estimating the bandwidth of pulsed dye lasers

Applied Optics, 1988
Two different formulas estimating the time-resolved bandwidth of pulsed, etalon-equipped dye lasers are analyzed. The reasons for the discrepancy are pointed out.

Matching estimators and optimal bandwidth choice

Statistics and Computing, 2005
Optimal bandwidth choice for matching estimators and their finite sample properties are examined. An approximation to their MSE is derived, as a basis for a plug-in bandwidth selector. In small samples, this approximation is not very accurate, though.

On the estimation of the bandwidth of nonuniformly sampled signals

1999 IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing. Proceedings. ICASSP99 (Cat. No.99CH36258), 1999
In many applications signals can only be sampled at nonuniformly spaced points. For a reliable reconstruction of the signal from its samples we require knowledge of the bandwidth of the signal, which however is often not known a priori. Therefore robust and efficient methods are needed that allow one to estimate the bandwidth of a signal from ...
