IN A RECENT ARTICLE IN THIS Journal, Rhoades and Yeats (R&Y)' found that U. S. commercial banking displayed a tendency toward deconsolidation over the period 1960-71. They attributed this to vigorous internal growth on the part of mediumsize banks, outweighing the consolidating effect of mergers and acquisitions.
