Intracerebral Borna disease virus infection of bank voles leading to peripheral spread and reverse transcription of viral RNA.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2011
Bornaviruses, which chronically infect many species, can cause severe neurological diseases in some animal species; their association with human neuropsychiatric disorders is, however, debatable.

Organic farms as refuges for small mammal biodiversity in agro ecosystems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Habitat fragmentation, the process by which relatively continuous habitats is broken into smaller pieces, occurs in natural systems but is to a high degree also human-induced through landscape use.

Barn owls exert top‐down effects on the abundance and behavior of rodent pests

open access: yesEcological Applications, Volume 36, Issue 3, April 2026.
Abstract Predators can exert top‐down effects on their prey by direct consumption, by imposing risk of predation, or a combination of both. However, empirical evidence for these effects is mixed and inconsistent. Barn owls in agriculture present a system with attributes that should, according to theory, lead to strong top‐down effects, but research is ...

Evidence That Bank Vole PrP Is a Universal Acceptor for Prions [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS Pathogens, 2014
Bank voles are uniquely susceptible to a wide range of prion strains isolated from many different species. To determine if this enhanced susceptibility to interspecies prion transmission is encoded within the sequence of the bank vole prion protein (BVPrP), we inoculated Tg(M109) and Tg(I109) mice, which express BVPrP containing either methionine or ...

Fire and Snow: Effects of Snowpack Variation and Wildfire on Small Mammal Dynamics in Sub‐Alpine Habitats

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 4, April 2026.
Global warming is increasing the risk of fire and decreasing winter snow cover in montane environments in many parts of the world. Using a long term trapping study in sub‐alpine habitats in the Australian Alps, we show that changes in the fire regime and snow conditions interact with other factors (availability of food and predation by introduced ...

Ontogenetic changes in the hemoglobin of the bank vole [PDF]

open access: yesActa Theriologica, 1983
Two hundred and thirty-two bank voles, Clethrionomys glareolus of different age (141 wild individuals and 91 laboratory inbred voles) were typed for hemoglobin. No foetal hemoglobin was found in foetuses and newborn animals. Two basic hemoglobin bands were found in the majority of individuals from 1-8 days old.

Effects of Strain and Species on the Septo-Temporal Distribution of Adult Neurogenesis in Rodents

open access: yesFrontiers in Neuroscience, 2017
The functional septo-temporal (dorso-ventral) differentiation of the hippocampus is accompanied by gradients of adult hippocampal neurogenesis (AHN) in laboratory rodents.

A globally consistent scaling relationship reveals stabilizing effects of dominant species in plant communities

open access: yesEcography, Volume 2026, Issue 4, April 2026.
Despite extensive research, stabilizing mechanisms in ecosystems remain uncertain. Taylor's power law (TPL) is a pervasive ecological pattern that describes how variance scales with mean abundance (σ2 = aμᵇ). While TPL has been widely studied within populations, its role across species within communities and its implications for stability remain ...

Heligmosomid infections in bank voles are associated with higher prevalence and greater abundance of other helminth species

open access: yesParasitology
The heligmosomid nematodes Heligmosomum mixtum and Heligmosomoides glareoli are dominant helminths infecting bank voles (Clethrionomys glareolus) in the temperate forests of NE Poland.
