Fatal Barium Intravasation During Barium Enema

Radiology, 1974
A case of barium intravasation during routine barium enema is reported and 8 previously documented cases reviewed. This occurrence may be related to mucosal inflammation, intestinal obstruction, increased intraluminal pressure, or misplacement of the catheter tip.

Barium embolisation during barium enema examination

The British Journal of Radiology, 1987
We agree with Dr Lewars that when extravasation of barium occurs from the rectum local trauma caused by balloon distension is a likely contributory factor, and that this danger is greater where the rectal mucosa is diseased.

Intravasation of barium sulphate at barium enema examination

The British Journal of Radiology, 2006
We report a case of venous intravasation of barium sulphate occurring during a routine barium enema examination for investigation of rectal bleeding. The patient suffered a cardiopulmonary arrest, but made a full recovery after organ support in intensive care. Review of radiographs from the examination showed intravasated barium in pelvic vessels.

Enhancement of Lead–Barium Exchangeability of Barium Hydroxyapatite

Journal of Colloid and Interface Science, 2001
In order to improve lead-barium exchangeability of barium hydroxyapatite (BaHAp), the effects of the recycle employment of BaHAp and the introduction of HCl into the exchange solution have been investigated at 293 K. The ion exchange capacity of BaHAp was evidently improved by use of the recycle experiments to reach levels approximately twice that ...

Extrinsic Barium Collection on Barium Enema Examination

JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association, 1980
History A 53-year-old man was admitted with epigastric pain of five to six days' duration. Normal stools had become tarry. The patient had a history of surgery 11 years ago for perforated peptic ulcer. Barium enema examination revealed findings as on Fig 1 (preevacuation) and Fig 2 (postevacuation). Figure 3 is a preevacuation spot film.
