To the Editor.— The overall diagnostic quality of barium enema roentgenograms is quite poor. We are missing 35% to 60% of notable pathologic findings; most of these findings would be readily demonstrable with good-quality roentgenograms. At least two areas must be addressed.

Clinical Radiology, 1988
The frequency of headache after Picolax (sodium picosulphate, Nordic Ltd) preparation for barium enema was investigated and its association with dehydration, as assessed by haemoconcentration, was determined. Eleven out of 41 patients (26.8%) complained specifically of headaches.

Variable Contrast Barium Enema
The British Journal of Radiology, 1955An additional technique for barium enema examination is described. The enema initially is of normal strength barium but a change is made to dilute barium or water. By this means, interference between the sigmoid and terminal ileum is avoided and penetrated type of films may be taken, both without loss of fluoroscopic visibility.

Manitoba Barium Enema Efficacy Study
Radiology, 1978Claims analysis and efficacy study are two new methods of evaluating medical services. In Manitoba, with a 1974 population of 1,053,382, approximately 100,000 patient-physician interfaces resulted in 16,594 barium enema examinations; 1,000 significant abnormalities were discovered, and the referring physician was unusally perceptive in predicting the ...
