Barium Enema Septicemia

A patient with acute leukemia and depressed bone marrow following chemotherapy developed a Clostridium perfringens septicemia immediately following a barium enema examination. Autopsy showed ulcerated colonic mucosa with phagocytized bacteria within the colonic wall.

SIMULTANEOUS SIGMOIDOSCOPY AND BARIUM ENEMA

A critical consideration of diseases of the large colon supports our belief that whenever a barium enema or sigmoidoscopy is indicated for diagnosis, the other is equally desirable. Both procedures have overlapping and supplementary spheres of applicability.

Complications of the Barium Enema

Summary 1.The hazards of the barium enema examination have been reviewed and our experience with 13 patients has been presented. 2.The probable etiological factors were overinflation of a balloon catheter (six cases), enema tip trauma (four), elevation of intraluminal pressure (two), and proctoscopic biopsy (one).

Bacteremia during barium enema study

The occurrence of bacteremia was studied in patients undergoing barium enema. Blood cultures were done on 34 patients before, during, and after the procedure using two schedules. Cultures were obtained once during the procedure in the first schedule and four times in the second.

History A 53-year-old man was admitted with epigastric pain of five to six days' duration. Normal stools had become tarry. The patient had a history of surgery 11 years ago for perforated peptic ulcer. Barium enema examination revealed findings as on Fig 1 (preevacuation) and Fig 2 (postevacuation). Figure 3 is a preevacuation spot film.

Intravasation of barium sulphate at barium enema examination

We report a case of venous intravasation of barium sulphate occurring during a routine barium enema examination for investigation of rectal bleeding. The patient suffered a cardiopulmonary arrest, but made a full recovery after organ support in intensive care. Review of radiographs from the examination showed intravasated barium in pelvic vessels.
