Environmental correlates of spatio‐temporal patterns of colour variation in a bird of prey: The common buzzard (Buteo buteo)

open access: yesIbis, Volume 168, Issue 3, Page 985-1001, July 2026.
High colour variability in animals has been associated with adaptability to environmental change. Establishing how such variability is distributed in time and space, and identifying environmental correlates, can help understand the processes driving it.

Social support as a buffer against mental health problems among persistent truants: Evidence from a large‐scale population survey

open access: yesInternational Journal of Social Welfare, Volume 35, Issue 3, July 2026.
Abstract Previous research has reported mental health disparities between truant and non‐truant adolescents. However, it remains unclear how social support is associated with mental health outcomes across different levels of truancy. We investigate whether social support has similar mental health benefits for all truant adolescents or whether it plays ...

Ecology of Low Pathogenicity Avian Influenza Virus H7 in Wild Birds in South‐Eastern Australia Prior to Emergence of High Pathogenicity Avian Influenza H7 in Poultry

open access: yesInfluenza and Other Respiratory Viruses, Volume 20, Issue 7, July 2026.
ABSTRACT Background Adding to the global burden of high pathogenicity avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1, five HPAI H7 outbreaks occurred globally in 2024. Of these, three occurred in South‐East Australia, with the independent emergence of HPAI H7N9, H7N8 and H7N3, resulting in the destruction of 2 million poultry.

Demography and Environment Shapes Genetic Variation: Spatiotemporal Genetic Dynamics in Cyclic Voles at Low Latitudes

open access: yesMolecular Ecology, Volume 35, Issue 13, July 2026.
ABSTRACT Understanding how genetic diversity persists in populations subject to extreme demographic fluctuations and recurrent bottlenecks is a central question in evolutionary and population ecology. Cyclic species provide ideal models for investigating this ecological puzzle, as they allow testing how demographic phases shape genetic dynamics.

Pioneer of Medical Mycology: In Memory of Prof. Friedrich Staib, MD, DVM

open access: yesMycoses, Volume 69, Issue 7, July 2026.
ABSTRACT At the beginning of Friedrich Staib's academic career in the 1950s, medical mycology was a young discipline in Germany. He studied veterinary and human medicine, earning two doctorates. Initially fascinated by the changes in intestinal flora caused by the newly emerging broad‐spectrum antibacterials, i.e., the selection of fungi.
