Electrophysiological properties of the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus motoneurones controlling airway mucus secretion in rats

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend Acidosis depolarises parasympathetic respiratory motoneurones in the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus (DMV) and increases their firing frequency by reducing TWIK‐2 channel conductance. Acidosis also activates astrocytes, which further enhance neuronal excitability through NMDA receptor‐dependent glutamatergic signalling.

Why Consider Separate Adherence Domains? Data From a 12‐Week Workplace Lifestyle Program in Taiwan: A Single‐Arm Real‐World Cohort Study

open access: yesLifestyle Medicine, Volume 7, Issue 4, October 2026.
ABSTRACT Background Workplace lifestyle programs are increasingly used for early cardiovascular–kidney–metabolic prevention but are commonly evaluated as whole packages. Whether distinct adherence domains within a multimodal program are associated with different short‐term health responses remains unclear.

Baroreflex Sensitivity and its association with Physical Activity in Elderly Population

open access: yesJournal Riphah College of Rehabilitation Sciences
Background: Baroreflex sensitivity is a negative feedback mechanism that is responsible for buffering or maintaining blood pressure in its normal range. The literature indicates that baroreflex sensitivity naturally declines with age, leading to a higher

Similar Patterns of Dysautonomia in Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue and Post-COVID-19 Syndromes

open access: yesPathophysiology
Background: There is a considerable overlap between the clinical presentation of post-COVID-19 condition (PCC) and myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS).

Respiratory modulation of cardiovagal baroreflex sensitivity

open access: yes, 2009
Emerging evidence has suggested that with minimal prerequisite training, slow deep breathing around 0.10 Hz can acutely enhance cardiovagal baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) in humans.

Exercise and Autonomic Cardiovascular Function—Insights From Spinal Cord‐Injured Humans: A Narrative Review

open access: yesActa Physiologica, Volume 242, Issue 10, October 2026.
ABSTRACT The cardiovascular response to acute exercise is mediated by the autonomic nervous system (ANS) control mechanisms that modulate vascular resistance to support blood pressure and ensure adequate blood flow to active muscles. These autonomic neurocirculatory control mechanisms include a feedforward mechanism, known as central command, and three

Utilizing Entropy to Systematically Quantify the Resting-Condition Baroreflex Regulation Function

open access: yesComplexity
Baroreflex is critical to maintain blood pressure homeostasis, and the quantification of baroreflex regulation function (BRF) can provide guidance for disease diagnosis, treatment, and healthcare.

Acupuncture for Poststroke Dysphagia: An NTS‐Centered Hypothesis‐Generating Framework Linking the Brainstem Swallowing Network, Neuroimmune Regulation, and Vagal Anti‐Inflammatory Signaling

open access: yesBrain and Behavior, Volume 16, Issue 9, September 2026.
ABSTRACT Background Poststroke dysphagia (PSD) may reflect not only focal motor pathway injury but also instability of the brainstem swallowing network under neuroimmune, glial, and vascular microenvironmental stress. Methods This mechanism‐oriented narrative review synthesized evidence on swallowing central pattern generator (CPG) organization ...

Relation between baroreflex sensitivity and cardiac vagal tone in humans

open access: yes, 1994
The extent of dependence of cardiac vagal tone on arterial baroreceptor input has been studied in 12 healthy, young adult subjects. Cardiac vagal tone was defined as the chang in R-R interval after complete cholinergic blockade by atropine.

The Health Benefits of Exercise: Molecular and Cellular Mechanisms

open access: yesMedComm, Volume 7, Issue 9, September 2026.
Our synthesis integrates evidence on exercise‐induced regulatory mechanisms across multiple systems (musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, nervous, metabolic and immune), cross‐system, and aging. We also discusses adaptive regulation of exercise in extreme environments, along with the prospects and challenges of multiomics and AI‐driven precision exercise ...
