The acute and chronic effects of local aerobic exercise on cardiovascular physiology

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Exercise training has beneficial effects for primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Effects of exercise training have typically been studied in the form of whole‐body exercise training, partly driven by the assumption that larger effects of exercise training can be achieved by involving more and larger muscle groups.

Pulmonary arterial mechanoreceptors mediate sustained sympathoexcitation during high altitude hypoxia in humans

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Sympathetic nervous system activation is a hallmark of high‐altitude hypoxia, yet the afferent mechanisms remain incompletely defined. We examined the relative contributions of pulmonary arterial mechanoreceptors and carotid chemoreceptors – two excitatory pathways co‐activated by hypoxia – to sustained sympathoexcitation at altitude.

Arterial Baroreflex Dysfunction Fails to Mimic Parkinson’s Disease in Rats

open access: yesJournal of Pharmacological Sciences, 2008
Patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD) often have attenuated baroreflex function, which may occur before the onset of PD-associated movement disorders.

Comparison of baroreflex sensitivity and heart period variability after myocardial infarction [PDF]

open access: yes, 1989
In animals, baroreflex sensitivity is inversely related to the likelihood of ventricular fibrillation during myocardial ischemia. After myocardial infarction in human patients, reduced baroreflex sensitivity is associated with increased mortality.

Pressure‐dependent coupling between arterial pressure and intercostal muscle blood‐flow index during acute hypotension in humans

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Regulation of respiratory muscle blood flow during acute systemic hypotension remains poorly understood in humans because continuous assessment of microvascular perfusion during rapid haemodynamic transients has been technically challenging. Using diffuse correlation spectroscopy, we investigated second‐by‐second coupling between mean arterial

Baroreflex sensitivity in patients with chronic heart failure: the clinical significance and impact of therapy

open access: yesТерапевтический архив, 2010
The review deals with the baroreflex regulation of circulation in chronic heart failure (CHF). The pathophysiological aspects of development of dysfunction of the baroreflex clinically estimated from its sensitivity are presented; the clinical value of ...

Baroreflex sensitivity in patients with vasovagal syncope

open access: yes, 1997
In the present study, we tested the hypothesis that baroreflex sensitivity is reduced in patients with vasovagal syncope compared with normal control ...

Microvascular endothelial function is blunted in postmenopausal females with frequent hot flushes

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Hot flushes of menopause are associated with elevated blood pressure (BP) and diminished macrovascular endothelial function, an initiating factor in the onset of atherosclerosis. Whether microvascular endothelial function is impaired in females with hot flushes, however, remains unknown.

A system identification approach to baroreflex sensitivity estimation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The body contains a bewildering array of regulatory systems which maintain homeostasis. There is considerable difficulty in isolating a single control loop for analysis, due to the interactions with other systems/loops.
