Asymptotic Orbits in Barred Spiral Galaxies [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2010
We study the formation of the spiral structure of barred spiral galaxies, using an $N$-body model. The evolution of this $N$-body model in the adiabatic approximation maintains a strong spiral pattern for more than 10 bar rotations.

The Distribution of Bar and Spiral Strengths in Disk Galaxies [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astronomical Journal, 2005
The distribution of bar strengths in disk galaxies is a fundamental property of the galaxy population that has only begun to be explored. We have applied the bar/spiral separation method of Buta, Block, and Knapen to derive the distribution of maximum ...

Barred spiral galaxies in modified gravity theories [PDF]

open access: greenMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2021
ABSTRACT When bars form within galaxy formation simulations in the standard cosmological context, dynamical friction with dark matter (DM) causes them to rotate rather slowly. However, almost all observed galactic bars are fast in terms of the ratio between corotation radius and bar length.

Star Formation Activity of Barred Spiral Galaxies [PDF]

open access: bronzeThe Astrophysical Journal, 2017
Abstract We study the star formation activity of nearby galaxies with bars using a sample of late-type galaxies at and from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey.

Pattern speeds in barred spiral galaxies [PDF]

open access: bronzeMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 1988
Des simulations a N corps montrent comment la barre des galaxies SB tourne, se separe de la structure spirale, la rattrappe et se connecte de nouveau au bras spiraux. Cela provient de vitesses de rotation differentes pour la barre et les bras spiraux.

Stellar populations in the center of barred spiral galaxies [PDF]

open access: bronzeProceedings of the International Astronomical Union, 2007
AbstractWe show observations obtained with the integral field spectrometer OASIS for the centers of a sample of barred galaxies. The high spatial resolution of the instrument allows to distinguish spatially some structures within these regions as defined by stellar populations of different ages and metallicities.

The profiles of bars in spiral galaxies

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2023
ABSTRACT We present an analysis of major-axis surface-brightness profiles of bars in a volume-limited sample of 182 barred spiral galaxies, using Spitzer 3.6 $\mu$m images. Unlike most previous studies, we use the entire bar profile, and we classify profiles into four categories.

The Frequency of Barred Spiral Galaxies in the Near-Infrared [PDF]

open access: bronzeThe Astronomical Journal, 2000
We have determined the fraction of barred galaxies in the H-band for a statistically well-defined sample of 186 spirals drawn from the Ohio State University Bright Spiral Galaxy survey. We find 56% of our sample to be strongly barred at H, while another 16% is weakly barred. Only 27% of our sample is unbarred in the near-infrared.
