AbstractWe show observations obtained with the integral field spectrometer OASIS for the centers of a sample of barred galaxies. The high spatial resolution of the instrument allows to distinguish spatially some structures within these regions as defined by stellar populations of different ages and metallicities.

The Frequency of Barred Spiral Galaxies in the Near-Infrared [PDF]
We have determined the fraction of barred galaxies in the H-band for a statistically well-defined sample of 186 spirals drawn from the Ohio State University Bright Spiral Galaxy survey. We find 56% of our sample to be strongly barred at H, while another 16% is weakly barred. Only 27% of our sample is unbarred in the near-infrared.

Simulations of the gas flow in a variety of two-dimensional barred spiral galaxies have shown that vortices in the gas appear, when viewed from above, in the corotation frame of the bar. These low-density vortices generally appear at or near the L4 and L5 Lagrangian points.
