Social interaction activities of older adults: a study based on the outdoor space of old apartment complexes in Tianjin, China

open access: yesJournal of Asian Architecture and Building Engineering
In the academic community, there is a concern about the effect of neighborhood outdoor spatial design on the social interaction of older adults. However, little attention has been paid to exploring the way of enhancing the mobility and social interaction

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Reinnervated free gracilis flap with basal curtain barrier for tongue reconstruction: a case series and surgical technique

open access: yesBMC Surgery
Objective Conventional free flaps for tongue reconstruction often result in adhesion and limited mobility. This study presents a case series of two patients evaluating a novel reinnervated free gracilis flap with a basal curtain barrier design.

Permanent Magnet minimization in PM-Assisted Synchronous Reluctance motors for wide speed range [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
This paper presents a technique to modify the rotor lamination of a permanent-magnet-assisted synchronous reluctance motor, in order to reduce the magnet volume with no side effect on performance.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Flexible Engineering Platforms for Barrier-Free Design and Usability Testing [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society Annual Meeting, 2000
Key-problems of barrier-free design and deficiencies of traditional usability engineering approaches as well as of existing engineering platforms are analysed. Evolution of technologies that support design and production of complex interactive software-hardware systems is presented.

Thermally activated switching of perpendicular magnet by spin-orbit spin torque

open access: yes, 2014
We theoretically investigate the threshold current for thermally activated switching of a perpendicular magnet by spin-orbit spin torque. Based on the Fokker-Planck equation, we obtain an analytic expression of the switching current, in agreement with ...

Computational design of metal-supported molecular switches: Transient ion formation during light- and electron-induced isomerisation of azobenzene [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
In molecular nanotechnology, a single molecule is envisioned to act as the basic building block of electronic devices. Such devices may be of special interest for organic photovoltaics, data storage, and smart materials.

Organizing the interface—Plasma membrane architecture and receptor dynamics in virus‐cell interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Plasma membranes contain dynamic nanoscale domains that organize lipids and receptors. Because viruses operate at similar scales, this architecture shapes early infection steps, including attachment, receptor engagement, and entry. Using influenza A virus and HIV‐1 as examples, we highlight how receptor nanoclusters, multivalent glycan interactions ...

Sensing of EGTA Mediated Barrier Tissue Disruption with an Organic Transistor

open access: yesBiosensors, 2013
Barrier tissue protects the body against external factors by restricting the passage of molecules. The gastrointestinal epithelium is an example of barrier tissue with the primary purpose of allowing the passage of ions and nutrients, while restricting ...
