Two algorithms for barrier synchronization

International Journal of Parallel Programming, 1988
We describe two new algorithms for implementing barrier synchronization on a shared-memory multicomputer. Both algorithms are based on a method due to \textit{E. D. Brooks} [ibid. 15, 295-307 (1986; Zbl 0641.68010)]. We first improve Brooks' algorithm by introducing double buffering.

A Speculative Mechanism for Barrier Synchronization

2014 IEEE Intl Conf on High Performance Computing and Communications, 2014 IEEE 6th Intl Symp on Cyberspace Safety and Security, 2014 IEEE 11th Intl Conf on Embedded Software and Syst (HPCC,CSS,ICESS), 2014
Barrier are synchronization operations widely used by compiler and programmer, it is flexible and convenient but there are some defects. Threads arrive at barrier ahead of other threads have to wait the subsequent threads. This lead to some waste of time.

TAB barrier: Hybrid barrier synchronization for NoC-based processors

2015 IEEE International Symposium on Circuits and Systems (ISCAS), 2015
As one of the mostly used synchronization schemes in parallel programming on multi-core processors, barrier synchronization has been extensively studied in former research works. In conventional master-slave barrier or tree barrier, usually one centric core is selected to collect barrier arriving messages and to broadcast barrier releasing messages ...

Performance of barrier synchronization methods in a multiaccess network

IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems, 1995
Barrier synchronization is a commonly used primitive in parallel processing, but has traditionally been implemented only on hardware multiprocessors. With the growing interest in concurrent computing on general purpose networks, it is worthwhile investigating methods for implementing barriers in such environments.

Efficient Techniques for Nested and Disjoint Barrier Synchronization

Journal of Parallel and Distributed Computing, 1999
Current MIMD computers support the execution of data parallel programs by providing a tree network to perform fast barrier synchronizations. However, there are two major limitations to using tree networks: The first arises due to control nesting in programs, and the second arises when the MIMD computer needs to run several programs simultaneously ...

Fast barrier synchronization hardware

Proceedings SUPERCOMPUTING '90, 2002
A special-purpose hardware scheme uniquely tailored to barrier synchronization is presented. It allows barrier synchronization to be performed within a single instruction cycle for moderately sized systems, and is scalable with logarithmic increase in synchronization time.
