Intra- and Inter-Host Assessment of Bartonella Diversity with Focus on Non-Hematophagous Bats and Associated Ectoparasites from Brazil

open access: yesMicroorganisms, 2020
The relationship among bats, ectoparasites and associated microorganisms is important to investigate how humans can become exposed to zoonotic agents. Even though the diversity of Bartonella spp.

Canine Bacterial Endocarditis: A Text Mining and Topics Modeling Analysis as an Approach for a Systematic Review

open access: yesMicroorganisms
Bacterial endocarditis (BE) is a severe infection of the endocardium and cardiac valves caused by bacterial agents in dogs. Diagnosis of endocarditis is challenging due to the variety of clinical presentations and lack of definitive diagnostic tests in ...

Molecular prevalence of Bartonella, Babesia, and hemotropic Mycoplasma species in dogs with hemangiosarcoma from across the United States

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2020
Hemangiosarcoma (HSA), a locally invasive and highly metastatic endothelial cell neoplasm, accounts for two-thirds of all cardiac and splenic neoplasms in dogs. Bartonella spp. infection has been reported in association with neoplastic and non-neoplastic

“Candidatus Bartonella thailandensis”: A new genotype of Bartonella identified from rodents [PDF]

open access: yesVeterinary Microbiology, 2009
Bartonella species, intracellular parasite of erythrocytes and endothelial cells, are zoonotic pathogens of wild and domestic animals including rodents. Many species of rodents are commensally infected with a few Bartonella species in Asia. However, there are only few reports on detection of Bartonella in Thailand.

tRNA signatures reveal polyphyletic origins of streamlined SAR11 genomes among the alphaproteobacteria [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Phylogenomic analyses are subject to bias from compositional convergence and noise from horizontal gene transfer (HGT). Compositional convergence is a likely cause of controversy regarding phylogeny of the SAR11 group of Alphaproteobacteria that have ...

Rapid Diagnostic Testing for Infective Endocarditis and Myocarditis Using Nanopore Targeted Sequencing

open access: yesiLABMED, EarlyView.
This research presents a method based on nanopore targeted sequencing (NTS) with pathogen‐specific panels for testing infective endocarditis (IE) and myocarditis. The NTS achieved a detection limit of 20 copies/test for the IE target panel and 10 copies/test for the myocarditis target panel.

Can Oral Swabs Be Used to Diagnose Nontuberculous Mycobacterial Cervicofacial Lymphadenitis?

open access: yesThe Laryngoscope, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective We investigated the presence of mycobacteria in the oral cavity and oropharynx of children with nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) cervicofacial lymphadenitis compared to negative controls. Our aim was to evaluate whether oral cavity and oropharyngeal swab sampling could serve as a minimally invasive alternative to diagnostic ...
