Engineering the Link: From Genome Interaction Maps to Functional Insight

open access: yesAdvanced Biology, EarlyView.
Advances in chromosome conformation capture have revealed the genome's 3D organization, yet its causal impact on gene regulation remains elusive. This review highlights emerging genome‐engineering tools ‐ zinc fingers, TALEs, and CRISPR‐Cas9 ‐ that enable targeted manipulation of chromatin loops to dissect structure–function relationships. It discusses

Energy-Aware Sink Node Localization Algorithm for Wireless Sensor Networks

open access: yesInternational Journal of Distributed Sensor Networks, 2015
Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are a family of wireless networks that usually operate with irreplaceable batteries. The energy sources limitation raises the need for designing specific protocols to prolong the operational lifetime of such networks ...

An Accurate and Efficient Analysis of a MBSFN Network

open access: yes, 2014
A new accurate analysis is presented for an OFDM-based multicast-broadcast single-frequency network (MBSFN). The topology of the network is modeled by a constrained random spatial model involving a fixed number of base stations placed over a finite area ...

X‐Ray Computed Tomography Quantifies Primary Phases and Reveals Crack Morphology in High‐Cycle Fatigue of Aluminum Alloy EN AW‐2618A

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Primary phases and a fatigue crack are studied in a forged blank of an aluminum alloy using synchrotron and laboratory X‐ray computed tomography. To image the crack, the fatigue test is interrupted, and a static tensile load is applied to open the crack.

Slow flows of an relativistic perfect fluid in a static gravitational field

open access: yes, 2000
Relativistic hydrodynamics of an isentropic fluid in a gravitational field is considered as the particular example from the family of Lagrangian hydrodynamic-type systems which possess an infinite set of integrals of motion due to the symmetry of ...

Piezotronic Transistor Based on Topological Insulators [PDF]

open access: yesACS Nano, 2017
Piezotronics and piezophototronics are emerging fields by coupling piezoelectric, semiconductor, and photon excitation effects for achieving high-performance strain-gated sensors, LEDs, and solar cells. The built-in piezoelectric potential effectively controls carrier transport characteristics in piezoelectric semiconductor materials, such as ZnO, GaN,

A Simulative Approach for the Prediction of Mesoscale Residual Stress Fields in Solution‐Strengthened Ferritic Ductile Iron

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study presents a 3D representative volume element‐based simulation approach to predict mesoscopic residual stress and strain fields in silicon solid solution‐strengthened ductile cast iron. By modeling phase transformation kinetics with an enhanced Johnson–Mehl–Avrami–Kolmogorov model, the effects of varying cooling rates on residual stresses are ...

Divisibility by 2 and 3 of certain Stirling numbers

open access: yes, 2008
The numbers e_p(k,n) defined as min(nu_p(S(k,j)j!): j >= n) appear frequently in algebraic topology. Here S(k,j) is the Stirling number of the second kind, and nu_p(-) the exponent of p. The author and Sun proved that if L is sufficiently large, then e_p(

Topological properties in ontology-based applications [PDF]

open access: yes2011 11th International Conference on Intelligent Systems Design and Applications, 2011
Representation and reasoning with spatial properties is essential in several application domains where ontologies are being successfully applied; e.g., Information Fusion systems. This requires a full characterization of the semantics of relations such as adjacent, included, overlapping, etc.

Fabrication‐Directed Entanglement for Designing Chiral and Anisotropic Metamaterial Foams

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This work introduces fabrication‐directed entanglement (FDE), combining viscous thread printing and topology optimization to program entangled foams with spatially patterned stiffness. By tuning coil density, FDE enables anisotropy, programmable Poisson's ratio, and chirality in foams.
