Decline in sea otter (Enhydra lutris) populations along the Alaska Peninsula, 1986–2001 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
During the 1990s, sea otter (Enhydra lutris) counts in the Aleutian archipelago decreased by 70% throughout the archipelago between 1992 and 2000. Recent aerial surveys in the Aleutians did not identify the eastward extent of the decline; therefore we ...

PARP inhibitors elicit distinct transcriptional programs in homologous recombination competent castration‐resistant prostate cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
PARP inhibitors are used to treat a small subset of prostate cancer patients. These studies reveal that PARP1 activity and expression are different between European American and African American prostate cancer tissue samples. Additionally, different PARP inhibitors cause unique and overlapping transcriptional changes, notably, p53 pathway upregulation.

Characterizing the salivary RNA landscape to identify potential diagnostic, prognostic, and follow‐up biomarkers for breast cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study explores salivary RNA for breast cancer (BC) diagnosis, prognosis, and follow‐up. High‐throughput RNA sequencing identified distinct salivary RNA signatures, including novel transcripts, that differentiate BC from healthy controls, characterize histological and molecular subtypes, and indicate lymph node involvement.

Land instability Compounds the risk of sea level rise in Alexandria, Egypt

open access: yesInternational Journal of Applied Earth Observations and Geoinformation
The coastal region of Alexandria Governorate in Egypt holds significant strategic importance for trade while being susceptible to extreme weather events. It confronts a dual challenge of the rising sea levels and, as found in this study, land instability.

Space-time Characteristics and Experimental Analysis of Broadening First-order Sea Clutter in HF Hybrid Sky-surface Wave Radar [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
In high frequency (HF) hybrid sky-surface wave radar, the first-order sea clutter broadening is very complex and serious under the influence of ionosphere and bistatic angle, which affects the detection of ship target.

Investigating the cell of origin and novel molecular targets in Merkel cell carcinoma: a historic misnomer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study indicates that Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) does not originate from Merkel cells, and identifies gene, protein & cellular expression of immune‐linked and neuroendocrine markers in primary and metastatic Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) tumor samples, linked to Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCPyV) status, with enrichment of B‐cell and other immune cell

Linear Quadratic Optimal Control of a Spar-Type Floating Offshore Wind Turbine in the Presence of Turbulent Wind and Different Sea States

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering, 2018
This paper presents the design of a linear quadratic (LQ) optimal controller for a spar-type floating offshore wind turbine (FOWT). The FOWT is exposed to different sea states and constant wind turbulence intensity above rated wind speed.

Real-time simulation of F100-PW-100 turbofan engine using the hybrid computer [PDF]

open access: yes
A real-time hybrid computer simulation of the F100-PW-100 augmented turbofan is presented. The digital portion of the hybrid computer is used to perform the bivariate function generation associated with modeling the performance of the engine's rotating ...
